How do you spell the name....

How do you spell the name Annelise?  Anneliese? Annaliese?  Annalise?

We are thinking of it for a MN, but the more I stare at it the weirder it looks.  Am I way off on my spelling?

For the record, the only one my computer thinks is spelled correctly is "Annalise."  Hmm...

Re: How do you spell the name....

  • I know a little girl whose name is spelled Annaleise, but I believe Annalise is also common.
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • The only person I know with this name spells it Anneliese.

  • I want to say Annaleise. But the old "I before e except after c" rule makes me think Annaliese might be the right way. I'm mobile bumping or I'd research it for you.

Honestly, its a lovely name, but all I see is "anal ease". :/

  • Annelise is the Danish form of Anneliese.  I'd probably pick one of those forms (I also happen to think they are the most "right" looking ones).

  • I usually see Anneliese.

  • My googling has found the original had e not a but for pronunciation reasons I'd keep the 'a' so 'anna' at start. As for ending I prefer the longer form: Annaliese

  • There's technically more than one correct way, but the only way I would spell it for my child is Anneliese.

  • I'll be the odd one out and say Annalise for me. But I have also seen the other spellings around too.

  • I second Annalise. I feel like it shows the proper pronunciation the best.
  • I think I either asked or just saw this question a while ago. IIRC, Anneliese is a Hebrew spelling and Annalise is a Greek spelling, and they're both considered correct.

I love this name. I prefer the looks of Anneliese, but if somebody were to shorten, I love Anna and HATE Anne. Seriously, it's probably my least favorite name. So I'm not sure which spelling I would go with if we used this name.

  • I know an Annelise who is Italian
  • I would pick either Annalise or Anneliese. But you are so right. The more you look at it the more wrong it looks. For American spelling Annalise is probably the best. I don't know how connected you are to the country of origin spelling. Maybe if it's a heritage thing I would go with the most accurate one to your heritage.
