Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Introducing solids question (maybe stupid??)

I know I'm supposed to introduce each veggie or fruit one at a time and give it 3 days to be sure LO is not allergic. So...

Do I give her say, sweet potato on Monday, then go back to cereal for the next 2 days with no sweet potato, or do I give her sweet potato every day of the 3 days?

Once she's ok with sweet potato, and were ready to try avocado, do we give her only avacado? Pair them for a meal (little bit of each)? Rotate on each meal?

Looking for how others do it. I don't know why I'm making this so hard. Been eating my whole life and I feel like food has gotten pretty complicated these days!! ;)

Re: Introducing solids question (maybe stupid??)

  • I'd give sweet potatoes for 3 days. My son has food allergies and they don't always have a reaction the first (or even second) time that they eat them. So there may be no reaction on day 1, but day 2 they could have one.

I think once you've given LO the new foods for a few days with no reactions then you can start pairing them or rotating. But if you start to see any reactions go back to one food at a time so you can make sure you know what is causing it.

  • I introduce a new one every three days.  On the second set of three days I did oatmeal, so now I pair the new food with oatmeal.  So first I did applesauce and then oatmeal.  Then I did sweet potato and oatmeal and tonight we are onto avocado and I'll give a little oatmeal, too.

  • Like everyone else said, it's the same food for three days.  The guideline is there just to make it easier to ID what caused a reaction if one occurs.  If you gave two new foods it still wouldn't be a huge deal but it means stopping feeding both of them and you really don't want to have to steer clear of more food choices than is necessary.

  • Give one food at a time for 3 to 4 days then switch to another food. Once you get through all the "first foods" then you can start mixing.

  • No once a food is considered safe it can be fed in addition to your new choice. However you don't do multiple meals for a while so it's not yet a real issue.
