I want to get DS a table and chairs for Christmas that he can use for snacks and arts and crafts. It will be in the kitchen/eating area. I would like to get a cherry colored one to match the cabinets since it is so visible but am concerned about cleanup with a wood set. My guess is that the plastic ones would clean up easier and I wouldn't have to worry about him beating it up. Anybody have experience with these tables?
Wood sounds like a bad idea to me then you'll be worried about spills and crafts. We just use the dinning room table for these things and I'm always having to keep it covered and wash the table cloth frequently
Kyler got an old oak set from my grandma (that was my dad and aunts from when they were young) for his birthday. It's in his room right now so it isn't used much. But when he wants to start crafts etc we will put it where it'll be used more. It already has some stains from my dads childhood, so I won't mind little stains from kyler. I know that doesn't help much for you. But I think as long as its kept clean when done using it or if a spill is made wood should be fine. You just need to worry about scuffs etc. but then again, it's a kids table... You'd kind of have to expect it to not stay perfect.

we got an oak table and chair set from my mom. it was hers when she was a little girl. It has pen marks on it and I was going to clean it off and then I figured I might as well wait until dd is done with it.

My mom gave DD a wood set that I had as a child. She asked my aunt to paint it white and paint a design on it. If she stains it or marks it, it's a child's set, so the way I see it the more marks, the more love. I don't really care. If it looks dishevelled after a few years I'll strip it and repaint it.
I have a plastic set my mom found at a consignment store. I really like it because it can withstand a beating and spills. It moves from inside to outside too depending on what the kids want to do so I like that I can leave it outside on the porch and it won't get damaged.
My parents have my old wooden one. The table top has a really durable coating so it cleans up easily. We going to take that one for our house. If Fifi messes it up, it will just add to the charm.
I have a cherry coffee table that C uses for her juice cups and drawings. It's a mess, but every night I wipe it down with a lysol wipe and it comes nice and clean. These days most wooden sets are treated well enough that they can withstand a little abuse (though I don't recommend letting LO play with your fork at dinner...my dining room table has holes now, finishes don't help with that!) If you want wood, go with wood.
