32 = 34 ... story follows

edited September 2013 in November 2013 Moms
You might look at this title and go "What?!" yeah that was my reaction this morning....

Went to another prenatal checkup, everything fine weight is good, BP great, Pulse fantastic. Cool Beans.
Sat in the room with DH and waited for the Doc to come in. Didn't take too long - about 10 minutes.

Doc: "So you're staying out of trouble, everything alright?"
Me: "Yeah everything's fine, nothing out of the ordinary except that I get headbutted pretty badly and it feels like he's trying to break out."
Doc: "So he's moving a lot?"
Me: "Yes and I was actually wondering last night if there's such a thing as moving too much *hahaha*."
Doc: "Well we like hearing that."

All cool until he says THIS

Doc: "Getting closer and closer, 34 weeks today, and only one more week of Medication and bedres."
Me: "..

         But isn't it 32 weeks?"
Doc: "Erm nope *crams on tablet with info* you're 34 weeks today."
Me: "..

At this point I'm completely dumbfounded and we proceed to get the Heart rate, LO's position (still head down, butt on the left side, feet in lungs) and then we measured...behold I measured 34 weeks.. O_O
I know at my 30 week appointment - which was on 9/13 - I measured almost 32 weeks. Not bad at all, right? But holy shit, apparently I got put up to 34 weeks and even as I'm writing this I don't know what to say except "Holy Shit"

  • Whattt! That's exciting!

  • Just because you're measuring ahead does not mean your GA has changed. You're still 32 weeks. You're just consistently measuring larger than "average" for that gestational age. It's not that big of a deal and the measurements shouldn't be used as any gauge for induction/labor starting.
This.  My fundal height has been measuring at least 1-2 weeks ahead and they have never changed LO's GA or EDD.  So, unless you've had your EDD wrong the entire time and your Dr just hasn't mentioned it before now, I don't think that you magically jumped ahead 2 weeks in gestation.
That's what confused me the most, because we went with my LMP and got my EDD (11/22) set in the system and nothing was mentioned about my Due Date being changed or anything in that matter..hmm

  • wow!!  Well thats exciting!!! :)  Better start packing that bag if you haven't started yet!! ;)
  • I'm certain you stole my progress.  I was measuring right on and then... no change from 2 weeks ago. I'm still measuring 32...though I did manage to gain 4 lbs.  ;)

Mhmm gotta get that done sooner than I thought I guess ^^' even if it's a "just-in-case" measurement. Better safe than sorry

I'm going to second the PPs about you still being 32 weeks. Just because LO is measuring slightly larger than average (which is totally normal) does not mean he/she has been developing longer. I know we're all anxious to meet our babies, but I would be very wary of my Dr trying to change my due date because of fundal measurements.
Yes and I'm also not willing to be induced before my original due date, it just doesn't sound right to me and I want baby to have as much time as he needs in there.
I'm having an Ultrasound done in 2 weeks to measure LO, but even then I know that all those numbers can be completely of.

  • I was told at my appointment this week that due to the baby's position after 30 weeks your measurements can be up to a week off in either direction. If baby is sitting high, you can measure bigger and measure smaller if baby is low.
I have measured 2 weeks ahead the whole time and they haven't changed my DD. I measured only one week ahead this week because she is really low.

Oh yeah, that's a really good point. I am "a stick figure who swallowed a basketball" (according to my sister) and the baby's measuring perfectly, but my belly measured small for quite a while just because it's so low.

  • Wait. I just re-read this.. They PUT you up to 34 weeks? I am due November 8th.. Always measuring ahead, in fact my OB doesn't think I'll make it past OCT 25.. But we still use my original due date and week measurement. If you do happen to go around 2 weeks early, at least you'll be full term !! <3
Yes they must have, can't explain it otherwise.
The thing that worries me the most is that I am on Bed-Rest and I take Procardia XL to relax uterine muscle because of contractions - I had issues with PTL at 28 weeks. I'm suppossed to take it until 35 weeks, which means that instead of the planned three more weeks (since I was 32 weeks today) it is only one more week (from what I've been told)..erm yeah weird right..Realization just took place..

I will have a serious talk about it at my next appointment. I just had a complete deer in the headlight moment!!

Your sister speaks the truth, I've seen it!  LO is up in my ribs, so I measure ahead.
That IS a really good point! :I

  • Mine has consistently (since u/s at week 8) measured about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks ahead. OB said that the first u/s is the most accurate and that we will not be moving my EDD.  At my growth u/s at 30 weeks it was the same thing - LO measuring at about 31 or so weeks.  Still due on 11/25.

Pfft. I guess. Nobody can resist those eyes.  Plus, I'm not ready!!!!
  • Currently 32 weeks, measuring 37 weeks. I know exactly when I ovulated so no there is no doubt about how far along I am.

    This is quite common.

  • Yesterday was the first time this whole pregnancy that our LO has measured large but the dr. said that could be due to any number of things (growth spurt, BH, position). She said unless he/she is consistently measuring large over an extended period of time (as in several months) there wouldn't be anything to worry about.

  • That's weird I would most certainly ask questions at your next apt. At my 32 week apt I measured 36 weeks. My dr just said it's not completely abnormal. And it changes nothing
