Maintaining a healthy weight?!

I gained like 10 lbs before I got pregnant putting me at my heaviest non pregnant weight. Do any of you wonderful ladies have any suggestions as how to maintain a healthy weight and not over gain? I don't want to be a whale by the end...

Food choices.. I shouldn't talk though because I've been eating like a freaking pig! But if you find you need to eat all day (like me) try going for more fruits and veggies and snacking all day, then eating smaller portions at meal times. I'm trying to practice what I preach but it's so hard when not much seems appetizing.

Smoothies are great too, they're packed with healthy stuff and they're filling.

I agree! I do the same thing. Lots of fruits and veggies, smoothies and etc. I also saw a weight calculator online somewhere that tells you how much weight you should gain for your height and weight while pregnant. I'm sure your dr can talk it over with you because they don't want you to gain too much either.:)
  • For exercise I'm just trying to go on a good walk most days, because I had suddenly realized that I was spending almost all of my time either in the house or at my desk at work.
  • Ugh I'm having such a hard time. I'm  usually either on a diet, or off the rails. Unfortunately for me, I gained 25lbs between my wedding and getting KU, so I'm fat to begin with! Meant to ask my Dr, but she oddly didn't say anything about it, lol

  • Between IF and a high risk pregnancy where I was put on a high calorie diet (iugr/pree) of 3000 calories a day and bedrest, I went from 127 to 224. I lost 50 lbs in the first year. Now I am pregnant again. I am traking calories on myfitnesspal. Before my bfp, I was eating 1200. Now I am eating 1500 to 1600 plus whatever I burn working out. I am trying to work put 4 to 5 times a week. Since my bfp, i lostt a pound then gained 2 and then lost 1...I am sure that really im about at status quo because that pound is probably water/bloat. I am hoping to keep my weight gain in the first tri to either nothing or very minimal.

  • Eating as balanced a diet as you can fresh, healthy and non processed! That's not to say you can't enjoy a cinnamon bun or cookie if your craving , just keep it to a small portion.

Also working out is fine but you gotta feel your body and what it's ok with. I'm currently doing turbo fire and modifying when they do a ton of high jumps. Before I got pregnant I did asylum part 2 but that's way too intense and plyo metric for pregnancy.

If you've never worked out you need to take it slowly and add it in, if your a crazed health nut like me then keep going and just modify! My doc said get women have run full marathons, go for it just listen to your body and baby !

    Hope this helps :)

  • I'm really nervous too. With my 2nd, I started at 130lbs, and by the end, was about 204lbs!! I'm no math whiz, but I think that's like 70lbs!! I'm just trying to make good choices. Fruits and small, frequent meals.
  • What I try to do is when I crave something bad, I take half the portion of it that I want and I end up feeling satisfied. I lost a couple of pounds the first week because I just wasn't hungry and couldn't eat my normal amount. Now I'm back to my pre-pregnancy size and just trying to eat how I do normally. I also try to walk at least 30mins every day. I am determined to not gain any more weight than needed, but if m/s kicks in, I may be screwed...

So I just say try your best and don't get down on yourself about it!

  • For now, since it is early, everything I've read says it is safe to do what you were doing before your bfp for the most part. Modifications have to be made as we progress but walking, jogging, swimming are good options. As well as free weights & yoga.

  • Pre-pregnancy, I was running 3.5 to 5 miles every other day outside in the Texas heat. Since my first dr appt isn't until Oct 8, I've decided to take it a little easier and have been walking on an incline on a treadmill for about an hour a day. Walking - especially on an incline - is a great, low-impact, safe way to burn calories.
  • Watch your carb intake. A healthy recommendation is 15-30 grams for snacks and 45-60 for meals.
