Where you homeschooled

If so how what ages, what style or curriculm, where did you live and do you know why your parents choose homeschooling?

Re: Where you homeschooled

  • Yes, in 7th and 10th grade.  My dad was in the air force and those were the years we moved during the school year.  I was pulled out of public school after a really bad 6th grade year and put into private schools for the rest.  In 7th grade, we used Abeka and for 10th, we used ACE.  We moved from CO to CA, and then to VA.  My DH was homeschooled from 4th grade on.  He lived in TX and VA, and I'm pretty sure his mom used all kinds of different curriculum.  For 11th and 12th grade, he went to a community college and took dual enrollment classes.

    Married to J since 5/05, Mommy to T (10/08), L (08/10) and C (02/13) who was born at home.

  • Yep, from 4th grade through 11th.  My parents decided to homeschool after several VERY bad years with the public school in our area.  I also took dual enrollment courses at the local community college.  We did many, many different curriculums! We started with Konos, did Life Pacs, Far Above Rubies, Unit Studies, and ended with Seton.  I'm sure there were more, but I don't remember any names.  It was just school to me.  We always did Saxon math with everything we did.  We started homeschooling while living in western Minnesota, then moved to Oklahoma.  From there we moved to Georgia and North Carolina, finally ending in Wisconsin.  There I attended public school for my senior year.

  • I was not homeschooled.  I went to public school from K-12.   My husband attended a Montessori school until the 8th grade, and then went to a public High School.

  • No, I wasn't. I went to private school PK-7th and then public 8th-12th. Neither experience was great, but I did learn more in private school.

  • I was homeschooled and my parents used ABeka, from age 2-12 years of age-I was advanced beyond my years. Sadly, that is the motive and it is too much pressure for children. I hated my parents for it and it taught me to hate school. I home school my son part time and have him part time in a private Christian school and they use PACE, this is EXCELLENT because it is at the child's own pace but the rewards make them want to learn more.....it's an older program and excellent, my son is getting straight A's!
  • Yes, I was unschooled from 2nd grade through middle school (I chose to attend high school). My parents did not believe in the structure or power dynamics of traditional school. We lived in both California and rural West Virginia. It was awesome.

  • I went to private school from ages 5-9 then after that my Mom started home schooling my little sister and I. My Mom was a school teacher for years and then one day she decided why am I teaching other peoples kids when I could teach my own? She home schooled us with Clonlara. I graduated high school at the age of 15.

So no one is going to touch the hilarious homophone usage given the subject matter of the board?

    Ok.
I don't think anyone wants to be rude.  Plus, the original poster is an advocate for public school and isn't homeschooling her children, so whatever ;)

Nope, I wasn't going to touch that or mention anything about the grammar displayed in the post.

  • Actually I was home schooled from 1st grade to 6th. Then back home after 3 months until freshman year. Then we moved and I INSISTED I go to a school and meet new people. Then back home until college. My mother decided to go this route because the school system in HI was horrible and private school was more then we could afford. We used a mix of curriculum, nothing pre-created until high school. We used Saxon for math, Wordly Wise and another phonics book. English books that were from the 40s, and re-printed for use. We also used various science books. In high school I not only did biology but also marine bio and chemistry. We got the kits and even did more experiments then my peers in school. I got a diploma because we were under the umbrella school of Mother of Divine Mercy. Each year we took the SATs (scholastic assessment tests) in high school and SATs (Stanford assessment tests) from 3rd grade on to prove we were actually learning.
I attended college on an academic scholarship, and am now finishing my MA with a 4.0.
However I would advocate for homeschooling only if you know that you can give your kids a good education. I had a friend who was 'home schooled', and it was a joke. They never did any work. My mom made us get up and be in the classroom by 7:45 nicely dressed every morning or we were tardy. :) She took it seriously.
