Success after IF

Failed FET Questions

My beta came back negative yesterday. Even though I'm crushed, my doc said we could do another FET (with our last remaining embyro) right away, so I'm trying to look forward instead of dwelling on this failure. I have a couple questions I was hoping some of you might be able to help me with:

1. For those with failed FETs, how long after you stopped your progesterone did you get your period?

2. My doc had recommended in the past to possibly save our last embryo for later and start new with a fresh IVF cycle. I didn't pay much attention at the time because I was optimistic about being successful and not needing another fresh IVF cycle. I have heard of people doing this, but I'm not sure of the reasons. Does anyone know why this route is sometimes recommended.

3. My doc said that we'll change some things for this FET to increase our chances for success. She'll be putting me on an antibiotic for 10-15 days prior to transfer instead of just 5 days like I've done for my past 2 FETs. And she be adding a drop of hcg into my uterus at the time of transfer. Has anyone done this protocol before? Just curious to see if these are common things for FETs.

I know I'll get more specific answers from my doc during our re-group consult, but my mind is running a million miles a minute right now and I was just hoping for some perspective from women who had been there. TIA!

I can't answer to most of the Qs as I've never done an FET but after our first IVF failed we had only one frostie. Instead of doing an FET with that remaining embie we decided to do another fresh cycle (which resulted in DD!). We now have 7 frosties!

The reason we decided to go ahead with a second fresh cycle instead of using our one frozen embie was because I knew I wanted more than one child. I also knew that, at 28, my eggs were the best they would' be. So we did one last fresh cycle in hopes to freeze a few for future children. I knew I would not want to go through a retrieval later in life and now, with a few frosties (7!) I won't have to. Hope that's the kind of info you are looking for! GL!

  • Sorry for your BFN but your outlook going forward is great!

I have a similar situation to the PP. Our first IVF failed but we had 5 frosties. Instead of doing a FET, we did another fresh IVF cycle.

Our RE actually didn't recommend this, but we did it anyway because we wanted to enroll in their shared risk program. If you plan on having more kids after this next one, then I could see not using the frostie now but if you don't, I would use it.

    GL with your decision!

  • After I stopped progesterone, it was only a few days before I got my next period.

My last FET was to close the door on treatments and use up the last 3 embryos we had.  They weren't great quality and we didn't expect it to really work.  It did.  With ID twins.  So go figure :)  We didn't do anything different fromt he first FET that I recall (there was 3 years inbetween the two cycles), except I was on thyroid meds because my thyroid levels were higher than they liked for TTC.  So who knows?  We didn't do the hCG thing you described.

I didn't want to have any embryos hanging out there.  I'd seriously panic when I thought of throwing them out, so it was crucial to me to not have anything left.  So, up to you what you want to do.  A frozen cycle is way cheaper than a fresh one, but it'll depend on what you plan to do for the future that will help you clarify your decision.

    Good luck!

  • I am sorry about your failed cycle :( once I stopped meds my cycle started a few days later. I did a final FET before another fresh cycle at a new clinic. I wanted to give the remaining embies a try & then start again. Best of luck whatever you decide.

  • I just had a failed too. Sorry to hear- it sucks!

1-I got my period 6 days later
2- i think the reason for this is to get fresh eggs while you're younger (even if it's only a month or two younger)
3- never heard of the antibiotics for 2 weeks or the hcg.

    good luck!
