Anybody go through a joint custody battle?

Just kind of curious about the basics. Maybe how long of a process it is? Is a lawyer advised for both parties? Does distance (2.5-3 hour separation) play a roll in the decision?

    We are both civil and friendly. But we disagree on a lot when it comes to DD. This being one of the things and I'm not sure either of us will budge.
