Lock down drill

My Kindergartner had to do this today. She told me how they put black paper on windows, closed and locked the doors. The boys went to one area of the room and the girls another. She said "we had a lock down practice mommy, in case a bad guy comes into the school" I think it's a good thing to be prepared, but man the world we live in today.
Luckily she didn't seem scared by it. I know she doesn't know how bad people can really be.

  • It's good that they're prepared but that's a very scary thought!!

  • I hated having to do those when I was teaching! Even the practice used to freak me out. Glad she was able to explain it though, despite how sad it is that our world requires such practice.

  • We do them twice a year. It's sad it has come to this but if a crisis ever occurs it's good to be as prepared as we can be.

  • So scary! I'm glad that they explained why they were doing the drill with out making the kids afraid.

  • @SJndVA Why do they separate the boys and girls?

I'm not sure.I'm assuming just to make directions easier. I can imagine in a real emergency it would be easiest to say girls here boys here so everyone gets to the correct place fast. The way the room is laid out there is a little nook type area for all the cubbies and there's a bathroom. Neither is big enough to hold all 30 kids. But there is a teacher and an assistant so both groups would have an adult with them.

So instead of confusing them and saying, group one and group two? That makes sense. How terrifying for you to think about. I remember they came and took fingerprints when I was in kindergarten. I asked why they were doing it and they said, "In case no one can find you." I refused saying, "I can just to tell people where I am." It's a scary world we live in.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • From our generation thinking tornado and fire drills were bad to out kids needing to proactive someone wants to come in and shoot them...scary :( #:-S

  • I think this is a fantastic idea. I actually attended NIU and was on campus the day of the shooting. It was pure madness with no system in place. Phones were overloaded, Internet was down because everyone was trying to figure out what to do. I was locked in a classroom for hours with no clue that the shooter was dead. I think drills and systems should be mandatory in any place with a lot of people (all schools, work places, etc).

Our parents' generation had drills for nuclear bombs. It's a tough world, but not really any worse that it ever was.
  • I remember doing this when I was in elementary school. It's a good thing to do for sure. I guess it wasn't very widely practiced then.

I'm old and we didn't have them. I do think its a good practice though.

Q: how old are your parents? Mine were born in the 60 s. No bombs. They were both inner city, so they were more worried about fights/gangs than anything.

  • We did this last week. As we were sitting there I had chills. Even though it was fake, it really put in to perspective how scary that would be for everyone.
