Baby Names

Girl Name Opinions- or other suggestions?

Baby #3 is a girl. DH and I settled on names for our first two very quickly but we are really struggling this time. DS is Gavin Bryan (mn is DH's fn). DD is Sophie Kay (mn is in honor of DH's mom who passed away)- and we usually do call her "Sophie Kay". For this one, I like my mom's middle name of Elaine and would LOVE to call her Lanie/Laney but DH vetoed it :-(  He just doesn't like Laney.  I'm not giving up hope that he will come around... but not holding my breath.  So these are our current choices:

Alexis Quinn

Macie Brooke or Macie Quinn

Kinley Reese or Kinley Brooke

Thoughts?  Other suggestions that we may have missed?  Any creative ways to bribe DH into Laney... jk... but not ;-)

Re: Girl Name Opinions- or other suggestions?

  • Hmm can't say I like any of the names on your list.

What about Elena Quinn...you can call her Laney if you want as a nn, doesn't mean your DH has to. One of my DD's is named Hayden, I like to call her Haddie...DH doesn't care for it so he doesn't do it, it hasn't been a big deal at all.

  • When I see Elena, I think "ellen-uh" but I suppose it's really supposed to be "E-lay-nuh?"  Maybe he would go for that.  I think he may actually go for Elaine, he just doesn't like Laney as a nn.  We have an Ellie in the family so that's out as a nn.

I should also mention that we have a very unique (weird) German last name with an L sound that is kind of a mouthful.  NOTHING goes with our last name but I don't want to complicate it more by having too many "L"s involved lol.

  • I love Sophie & Gavin so much and feel that the choices here don't live up to the sibset, sorry. But the one I like the best is Macie Quinn

I know!  I feel that way too!  This has been soooo much harder than I ever expected.

  • I kind of agree that these names don't quite fit with your other kids' names. I like PP suggestion of Elena; you could also try Milena, Delaney (similar to Laney, but sometimes a little sound difference is all it takes for someone to like it), or Magdelena. Would your DH go for just Lane? That would be cute in the MN spot, for instance. Sophie Kay and Macy Lane are adorable together.

  • Couldn't your mom's name be the middle name since your other children have middle names from DH's side? If you're worried about too many L's then go with a first name without an "L". Then every now and then you can sneak in a little " ______ Laney"!

  • I think Elaine sounds much nicer paired with Alexis, Macie, or Kinley (although I don't care for Kinley at all) than any of your current mn choices.

Maybe Helena or Eliana? I agree that the current names on your list don't come close to Gavin and Sophie for me...Gavin and Sophie are more classic-popular and your current list is very trendy-modern.

  • Ok, you guys made some good points. I tend to agree that Kinley and Macie are not as classic as Gavin and Sophie and don't really live up to those names. I'll try search through some more "classic" names. Oh and DH just said he really doesn't care for any of the "Elaine" names so I need to let that one go. Back to the drawing board.

  • Can't you call your daughter by any nn you want? My daughter's name is Adelaide and that is what I call her (and what I introduce her as).. My DH calls her Addie, which I don't care for, but I don't stop him from calling her that.. She is also now Addie to most of our family (except her brothers call her Adelaide).. And I don't mind it.. I think it's nice that the family calls her something different than everyone else. So if you both like Elaine, then use it. You should be able to call her Laney if you want.. YH can call her Elaine (or whatever cute nn he comes up with for her).
  • I love Elaine or Elena, if that's an option.

Alexis Quinn - I like it. Alexis has grown on me since I know one, but I usually prefer Alexandra.

Macie Brooke or Macie Quinn - I don't like this much, it reminds me of the girl from Teen Mom.

Kinley Reese or Kinley Brooke - dislike. Cutesy, trendy name that will seem very dated in 20 years. I thought it was a made-up name at first, but just discovered it's not when I googled it out of curiosity. It still sounds like one of the trendy build-a-names that are popular right now though.

  • I think I'd fight for Elaine for the middle name spot at least.  He has two kids with names from his family.  What a about a classic name with Elaine in the mn spot.

    Kathryn Elaine
    Sarah Elaine
  • Well my DD is Delaney and DH didn't like Laney but I just called her that all the time and it stuck and now he does too. So maybe just name her Elaine and you can call her Lainey all you want :)
