Maternity clothes?

Well I am 6 wks pregnant with second child and I really would much rather start buying maternity clothes rather than just buy bigger clothes. I'm not wanting to spend a large chunk of $ on them since I will only have them for a short while obviously. Where do you buy maternity clothes? I'm 5'3" so I have that trouble of pants being too long.

Re: Maternity clothes?

  • Motherhood maternity has pants in different lengths.  If you have an Old Navy nearby with a maternity section they have some staples that aren't too expensive.  If there isn't one nearby you can always order on line, they have pretty frequent discounts and free shipping too.  Target usually has some decent stuff as well, but they never seem to have many choices at once.

  • I have to have some of my Old Navy pants hemmed but that's where I get most of my stuff.

I shopped some thrift stores last weekend and got some really good deals including a pea coat for $5! Maternity clothes are not typically worn for very long so used clothes are usually in pretty good shape. I'm going to have the opposite problem with pants (I'm 5'11"), but hemming is usually not that expensive!

  • Ross and Burlington Coat factory are good for frugal people particularly for shirts. Aside from that, I peruse the clearance rack at Old Navy (scored clothes for warm weather for a steal) and the clearance racks at Kohls. I'll also be hitting Kohls this weekend for Kohls cash and to use my moms 30% off.

I try to stay away from Gordmans and Motherhood because theyre too pricey for me.

  • Thrift stores, Craigslist, and (depending on your area) you might be able to catch some late-summer/early fall garage sales.  Also, if you start looking now, you can keep your eyes out for good sales and good coupons.  A lot of ladies here post PSAs for good sales.  Motherhood Maternity is constantly running sales.  Check Zulily.com daily (though their stuff is still usually on the high end).  Gap Maternity clothes are my favorite (though the pants do tend to run a little long in my experience), so if you have a store in your area, their clearance section can sometimes be gold.  Another tip is to ask a recently pregnant friend to borrow some of her maternity clothes.  Like PPs said, most used maternity clothes are in decent shape since they aren't worn very long.

  • I've been stopping my target and kohls and snatching up some off their clearance section. I got two pairs of jeans for the price of one.
  • I bought a couple of basics (work pants, jeans and a dress) new from H&M, and they were pretty inexpensive.  For tops, definitely thrift stores.  Maybe look around your area for baby/toddler consignment stores as they often carry maternity clothes as well.

  • I would look on local garage sale sites and craigs list for moms who are done selling lots of clothes for cheap. Consignment sales too.

I bought a ton of maternity clothes last time that I hope to get use out of this time even though the seasons are different.

  • Last pregnancy I bought a ton of work pants/ nice slacks, and they were not cheap, but I justified the price as this is what I will be wearing to work everyday for the next 6+ months at motherhood maternity. And they all fell apart after having them a couple of months. The stitching around the elastic waste band came out as did the hemming in the legs, not to mention the legs pilled something terrible. My advice don't buy in bulk as more than likely what you chose might not hold up and then you've spent a ton and will have to do more shopping by the end of your term.

If you do need dress pants I bought some for really cheap at jc penneys , online they no longer carry maternity in the store, (no I'm not a fan of penneys so I was floored) but they were really nice washed well and held up great. I've already started wearing them again from last pregnancy.

Sorry this is so long, I know I ramble!
  • Thanks all! I'm looking and shopping around. Hopefully will find some great deals!
  • Also keep in mind you may end up in two different sized maternity pants. Towards the end I needed the next size up last time. But I also gained 60 lbs (almost entirely in my belly) too.
