Freaking out, measles at daycare (Ladiebug)

OMG OMG OMG.  So I go to drop LO off at daycare this morning and there is a newsletter to pick up.  I start to skim it and one of the 3 year olds was out last week with confirmed MEASLES.  The CDC is apparently already involved.  LO's classroom is on the opposite side of the building so shouldn't have had contact, but now I am terrified.  Unfortunately I couldn't call in today at the last minute so he is there.  He is only 13 months, we don't get vaccinated until 15 months.  I really thought I had chosen a center that didn't allow unvaccinated children, so who knows what the whole story is. 

Sorry I guess this is more of a rant than anything, but I have some serious reading to do today, and I need to decide whether or not to send LO for the next few days.  Unfortunately we don't live near any family to help out.  Mostly I'm angry, this isn't 1813, it should be swine flu I'm worried about, not measles.  Grrr.

Thanks ladies.  From what I have read on the CDC website you don't break out for 7-10 days after exposure, so we won't really know if the center is in the clear until we get through another week without any cases.  I think I will give the pedi a call just to be sure.  And I'm pregnant, should I even take care of a kid with measles?  So I guess I need to call the OB too.

I am so so sorry. I have seen numerous outbreaks lately and this irritates me for the fact that its preventable. Can you call your Pedi about the vaccine? When there was a outbreak in Houston I had asked my Pediatrician and she told me it isn't until 12 months. Not saying that it could help if there was contamination but something to think about. I would be asking about answers on unvaccinated children etc. I hope your Lo is ok and nothing happens.

It is really infuriating.  I am a huge believer in vaccines and now this.  Plus it isn't like I live in NYC, I'm in Jackson MS of all places!  Nothing happens here, ever!

I talked to the pedi, at this point they didn't think vaccinating him early would really be of any benefit since it has been probably a week since potential exposure.  I'm just supposed to watch closely for a very high fever or rash.

This whole thread makes me so sad but it totally reinforces a decision I made last week to suspend M's chiropractic care.  They are a lovely husband and wife team and have been incredibly kind but it came to my attention that they have chosen not to vaccinate their 4 kids and since their practice is in their home, I can't justify repeatedly risking exposure.  The part I'm kind of mad about is that they don't inform people of this risk and they are renowned for their care of infants and children.  

I truly don't understand how people can stomach risking their children's lives and the lives of others.

No they weren't supposed to take unvaccinated kids, or at least that was my understand when we enrolled.  Just last month LO was 1 wk late for his one yr vaccinations due a rescheduled appt and I got a letter from the center about it. 

I know there is still more of the story to find out, and the bottom line is vaccines aren't 100%, so it may have been a failure.  I'm about to go and pick him up, hopefully I will get the rest of the answers.  The scary thing is that she had to get it from somewhere....

Wow! How scary! This makes me even more grateful we have family who watch LO... I would be sick with worry! FX that your LO is fine! Sorry your ped wasn't more helpful, the wait and see game is so frustrating. Big HUGS!

Omigosh, really hope your LO is in the clear and that no other littles are affected. So scary.

I hope LO is okay. That is so scary. It was my understanding from the pedi that vaccinations aren't as effective until they have all the doses. Regardless you know someone in your area didn't vaccinate their child and chose to expose other people.
