Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old going to sleep question

My LO falls asleep every night in my arms while we are watching tv, I don't have to rock him or pat, just pop the soothie in his mouth and he's out. I normally hold him for 1/2 hour then go put him in his RNP which is still in our room. I plan to start him in the crib in he next few days and wonder if I should lay him in his crib at the the time he fals sleep in my arms to see if he will do the same as he does when we are watching tv? I know the crib will be something new at night (I currently put him in his crib for every nap) so wasn't sure if that would be too many new things at one time. I've tried putting him down for naps when his eyes are heavy but he wakes right back up so I hold him until he's out then I lay him down. I keep thinking he's not ready to self soothe. He goes to sleep at 7:30 and doesn't wake up until 6:00/6:30 am with no wake ups during the night and has done this for about 1.5 months. Any advice is welcome! I don't want to do cry it out but it seems Like the popular choice among my friends. I'll mention if relevant, I'm a SAHM Thank you in advance!

Re: 4 month old going to sleep question

  • Since naps are already in the crib, why not try to just put him down in the crib at night? He make wake a few times because he's got more space overnight and that might freak him out a little but just go in and rub his back and hope he gets back to sleep.

We had the bouncer in the crib for the first transistion into the crib. Then we had her sleeping in the boppy lounger (with no hole) for a few weeks - in the crib. We did both of these since she would spit up quite a bit in her sleep.

After a few weeks we just put her in the crib like normal and she's been fine with it. She does wake 1-2x a night depending on if she gets mad when she's rolling over but she goes back to sleep again quickly. * also depends on growth spurt etc

    Give it a shot!

  • Thanks! I guess I'm just dreading the waking part since I've been so used to him sttn! I have a video monitor so that should help. He hasn't rolled over yet so we should be good there ( hopefully not for long, waiting for that to happen!)
  • How old is he? Once ours stopped sleeping in the boppy lounger, she started rolling the next week. I was terrified at first about her sleeping on her tummy but her head is always to one side. I think now she's crawling in her sleep! I check on her when we go to bed and she's in a COMPLETELY different position/area of the crib - same when she wakes me at 2:30 am for feeding.

And the sleep patterns can change! Ours STTN fora  few weeks, then BAM back to up 1x a night. Then we hit 4mo and it was 2-3x a night I was up.  ;)

  • He just turned four months, he threw himself off his schedule (going to bed at 7:30 waking at 5/5:30) now he is going to bed 8/8:30, it all depends on when he eats. He was wanting more the past couple days so I've upped him 1/2 oz.. I keep the thought in the back of my head as far as sleep changing and try do read and get ideas, but I Ned to stop and just go with the flow. I'm hoping I don't have to do CIO, but if it comes down to it I might.
  • I'm trying to figure out if I need to sleep train also, I don't have to do much to get him to fall asleep, but I have tried laying him down "drowsy" but he perks right back up and I don't know if I should just leave him there or is that due to him not being ready? Sometimes he falls asleep during tummy time without my help and I just leave him be but most naps he falls asleep in. Y arms and when I know he's out I put him in his crib. I've been feeling pretty overwhelmed about the whole sleep thing for some reason.
  • We are just starting to work on this now at 5 months. I put DS down sleepy and then pat his back or belly until he gets drowsy then I step out quietly. So far it seems to be going well and he is finally napping today for the first time without being held
