Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Phasing out the swaddle

DS is 5 months & still swaddled. There have been lots times where he has napped without it, but then there are times I've put him down unswaddled & he wakes up.

I know we need to stop the swaddle soon, but how?? We use the woombie. I've read ppl do half swaddles, but I don't think we can do that. I guess I just want to know why it's needed most days but not on random occasions?? How can we stop it altogether? How long will it take?

Re: Phasing out the swaddle

  • We got my son out of a swaddle at around 5 months after thinking he slept better in it. It took far less time than I thought to get him out and when we did he would wake up much happier, I think bc he was able to play rather than stuck trying to get him arms out. He also began rolling over very soon after. We started with one arm out for a day or two and then did the wrap like mentioned above and then switched to sleep sacks. In retrospect we probably could've got him out a few weeks earlier with no issue. All in all it took 3 days with one night of him waking on occassion.

  • He just slept 3 he's in my bed with no swaddle & woke up screaming. Not sure if its related
  • We transitioned into the baby Merlin sleep suit. Truly magic. I realize that we'll need to wean off this too, but we'll cross that bridge later...
  • We stopped the swaddle at 4.5 mo at the pedi's suggestion (because DS was rolling one way).  The pedi also suggested that we hold his arms to his sides until he fell asleep to get him used to falling asleep in the crib without the swaddle. After a few nights, DS learned that there is nothing he likes better than rolling to his side and falling asleep sucking his fingers...we were expecting the worst but it went pretty smoothly all in all!
  • We use what is called a zipadeezip.  It is awesome.  You can purchase them at zipadeezip.com.  They also have a facebook page.
  • Diddo on the zipadeezip.  It's a great product!
  • Hm, very similar to the woombie, just more arm movement.
