Reflux babies and WCM

Sorry, but this is a little long:

My DD was put on Zantac at 7 weeks old for acid reflux.  She took the meds until about 9 months, and has been doing great without it.  He loves yogurt and cheese and has no issues with it.  She turned one on 9/18 so I figured it was time to start switching her over to regular milk.  On Sunday I added 1.5 oz of WCM to her morning and afternoon bottles.  About 3 hours after her first bottle she woke up from her nap after only 15 minutes coughing so hard I thought she was going to puke.  I could hear the fluid coming up and she was screaming.  She seemed a little better after that, but she was up all night with terrible gas pains and I could hear the reflux.  She didn't have any WCM on Monday but we had the same problem Monday night.  She keeps coughing and did puke a few times Monday night.  She squirmed, crawled all over me and passed gas all night.  The babysitter told me today that she is still coughing a little and did throw up some after lunch.  So my question is, could a milk sensitivity/intolerance cause her reflux to get that bad and still be bothering her days later???

Re: Reflux babies and WCM

  • Yes. Dairy stays with you for several days. Many of the MSPI moms on the board had to keep it out of their diets for 3 weeks to rule it out completely.

HOWEVER, if your kid is eating yogurt and cheese with no reactions, I doubt it is an intolerance.

I would call the pedi or just the nurses line to discuss.

L has been consuming WCM with little issue, but I have not weaned off of her reflux meds yet.

  • We had some issues with Reid, but we did half formula and half WCM for a few weeks before fully switching to WCM full time.  He thew up a first but is fine now drinking 16-20oz of WCM each day.  Call the pedi and see what they say!

I remember reading that a lot of folks with dairy intolerance actually do okay with cheese and yogurt because the protein changes while it's being heated or something? Very scientific of me, I know. Sorry. But that could explain why that stuff seems to be okay but milk isn't!
