My DD's name is Emily and if LO#2 is a girl we were thinking of the name Ella. Is it too matchy?

I have an Emily and Ella was on my list too...my husband told me it was too much of a mouth full and when I came here that was the general feeling too.  I've nixed it but if you love it, I say go for it.

I don't think it's too matchy.. But more importantly to me is if that's your favorite name, use it! We don't have to match (or unmatch) our children's names for other people's approval.

Yes, these are very similar names. 

Other names you might consider: 

Ellen, Elora, Elaina, Elsa, and Elena are less similar to Emily. 

I would chose a name that is similar to Emily but does not start with an E. Great options would be:

Amelia, Olivia, Cecilia, Sarah, Catherine, Claire, or perhaps a double name that has two names like Sarah Claire or Ella Kate. I think adding a second name to Ella would make it not be so matchy to Emily, but some people hate double names. I find them sweet. Ella Claire, Ella Kate, or Ella Grace could be cute. 

More unusual choices that would be nice with Emily: Delaney, Felicity, Millicent (nn Millie), Matilda, Tabitha, etc.

I am not one to have my whole family start with one letter, but I don't think Emily and Ella are any worse than some twin or sibling name sets I've seen in the past.

We are now thinking Norah. I thought it was too matchy but I wanted to be sure. Also I am not a huge fan of having my kid's names start with the same letter so that was a draw back too. I still like the name Ella but I don't think it will end up working out for us. Thank you ladies for your help!

I sort of prefer the Nora spelling - it seems less fussy. I don't get the unneeded H but I know they are both right. But I guess Hannah would look weird Hanna, so it may be the same deal. Either way, Norah or Nora are great!
