Working Moms

How often do you exercise? And when do you fit it in?

Just curious how often other WM are able to exercise during the week and the weekend and when do you find the time to do it.
Currently, I am running 2-3 times per week during my lunch hour. It's the only time that I can seem to do it-
Just wondering what other moms do- Oh, and what is your exercise of choice?

Re: How often do you exercise? And when do you fit it in?

  • I work out during my lunch hour as well.  I have time to do it after work but I've found that I'm more likely to do it if I do it during lunch.

  • It varies.  Lately I've been doing workout videos at home after the kids are in bed for the night.  Sometimes I will work out on my lunch break instead, and on days I work from home (about 1x/wk) sometimes I'll go for a run or get on the treadmill at home before the end of the day.  I feel like I am always having to juggle things around to fit it in, but I try to make it a priority.

  • I'm also a runner. DH does daycare pick-up twice a week so I try to get a run in one evening after work. (The other day I'm usually working late.)

I also try to go every Saturday and Sunday, which was part of my routine even before kids. The only difference is now DH and I take turns where we used to go together.

  • I get up at 3:45am to pump and workout. I usually walk/jog 3 or 4 miles. I tried working out once DD went to sleep but my energy level just wasn't cutting it.

I'm a big runner as well.  When I got pregnant we bought a treadmill.  Currently, I wake up at 5 to run, work out at the gym in my hospital during lunch, or work out at night after DD goes to bed.

Exercise is non-negotiable for me.   I  work out 5-6 times a week.  On weekends I either go running outside or will get on the treadmill while DD naps.

I lift and do abdominal workouts at home as well.  The treadmill has been a lifesaver though.  DH is a military pilot, currently deployed, so I do lots of long runs on it while he is away.

  • I run three times a week. Twice at night after I nurse and put DS2 down (around 7:30) and then once in the morning on the weekends. DH hangs out with DS1 and bathes and puts him down, and then he watches both boys on the weekends or i will run with DS1 in the stroller.
I am trying to add a fourth run to the week, but its been hard.

I drink a protein shake for dinner/breakfast. I change into my work out clothes when I get home from work to keep me motivated.

When I stop pumping at work, I will go back to working out on my lunch hour.

  • I wish I could find time, I get up at 530 for work w/ LO and begin writing all the lesson plans and catching up on house work when she goes to bed at 715. By 945 I'm out cold, sometimes I do wish I had just a few more hours in the day.

  • @ClaryPax & @Nicb13, some mornings are harder than others. I have to pump, workout, and shower before 5:50 when DD wakes up so that's my motivation to get up. I wish I could workout vicariously through someone else and still get results, lol.

  • I run 3 times a week and bike once.  I run right after work before I pick the kids up from daycare.  I bike on the weekend while DH watches the kids.

This is me too. DD wakes up just before 6 and I don't think I can physically get up early enough to work out and shower and be done before she wakes.

  • Nights after my girls are in bed, and weekends.  I am not agreeable to getting up early to work out.  I wake up relatively late which is why I can work out at night and still do other stuff around the house.  My girls go down around 8:30 or 9:00.  I work out 3 times a week from 9:30-10 or 10-10:30.  I'm also starting my volleyball league again on Mondays and I'm taking a beginning ballet class (HARDEST CLASS EVER) on Sunday mornings while the toddler take her ballet class!

  • I work out during lunch 5x/wk running or strength training. I finished the Insanity workout 60 day challenge by fitting it in at 3:45 am in the morning. I'm taking a couple weeks off until I figure out my next early morning routine.

  • I get up at 5:15 three days a week to hit the treadmill for half an hour before I shower.

  • I'm just starting to get back to moving more regularly.  I WFH twice a week, so on those days, I drop DD1 off at preschool at 7:45 and take DD2 to a local park with a 2 mile loop.  I slipped a disc a few weeks ago, so I'm just walking right now, but at a pretty decent pace.  I also try to get out for a long walk once or twice over the weekend.  I'm trying to build up to more intense and more frequent workouts.

I really miss working out in the mornings.  DD2 is still getting up to eat 1-2X per night, and I just can't make myself get up any earlier after only getting a few hours of interrupted sleep.  I work through lunch every day, so that's really not an option for me right now.

    Impressive!

  • At best I work out 4 times week, but if I am able to get in more than 2 workouts during the week I feel like it is a huge win. I do a class on Wednesday mornings when I WFH, and I try and work out 1-2 other days during lunch, plus a long run or bike ride on the weekends. I am going to start doing prenatal yoga classes on Friday mornings which I am quite excited about.

I have never been able to get my butt out of bed early in the mornings to work out before work. Youd think after being a swimmer for 10+ years and having morning practice at 5am 4 days a week it would be cake, but my body is so over that noise!

  • Impressive work out schedules!  I can only fit in exercise 2-3 days a week - I take a kettlebells class at the Y on Tuesday before I pick up LOs and then run on Sat during DD2 gymnastics class and try to fit in another run one other day.

Question for those who work out at lunch ( @LoCarb @jlaOK ) : does your work have a shower facility or do you just do a quick freshen up?   Lunch workouts would be better for me

A previous building I worked at had shower facilities but this building has nothing.

  • I aim for daily, although lately been using Mondays as a rest day (long runs on Sundays since I'm training for my first half marathon).  My schedule varies - some days it is a dvd before the child wakes up in the morning (yoga, shred it with weights, 6-pack abs, kettle bells); if DH does not work the night before (he is third shift) I will get up early and either run in the neighbhorhood if there is enough light or come into the gym at work to spin and lift weights; lunch breaks will quite often find me in the gym or running on our trail outside; occasional after work runs with friends or a quick workout in the gym at work; Saturdays I usually get a longer gym session in; Sundays (as mentioned previously) are currently my long run days.

  • I walk/jog with the kids after work.  We have a nanny and I get home about 5:30 but my husband doesn't get home til closer to 6:30 so I usually get home, visit for a little bit then we go walk for 30 mins or so.

  • The main source of my exercise is walking the halls and stairs of the school.  My supervisor has one of the trackers of your steps and I think she tracks about 2 miles on average.  Otherwise I get exercise when I walk the dog or with my dd.

  • I do Zumba 3x/wk. the gym has babysitting that I use. I try to go to another work out session but I just don't have time.

  • I also work out at lunch, our gym keeps it pretty cool in there - 66, and there are fans, I do sweat some but not a ton, just a quick freshen up and back to work, it's not too bad!  It makes it so much nicer to do at lunch, no waking up early or trying to fit it in at night.  My DS and DH come on Fridays for lunch, so after work, I usually run a couple miles with DS in the stroller and then we go get groceries and pizza, on Saturday and/or Sunday we do family runs with all 3 of us.
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays 8pm-9pm with my trainer (I wouldn't work out without him).  DS is down around 7, so doesn't interfere.  Occasionally on Saturday and/or Sunday depending on our family plans (football season did just start after all, and DH works out Saturday and Sunday mornings 8am-11am).

@WBMom-Yes my gym has shower facilities; I do a quick rinse. I do not wash my hair and use a blow dryer if my hair is damp. I use wipes to clean the makeup/sweat off my face and reapply minimum make-up followed with a spritz of BBW body spray.

  • Wow other WM's- I am impressed by the workout routines. I was inspired to ask the question after reading the "having it all" chain. Exercise is something that is a neccesity to me and would fall under the doing it all catergory.

I am a lunch worker- outer and someone asked about showering facilities. I work on the main campus twice a week and we do have showers there. When I work from the remote campus, we do not have showers, so I just try to pull it together the best I can. That being said, I have my own office and I only see students if they have an appt.- So no one else has to suffer due to my sweatiness :)

  • 5-6 days per week.  I get up around 5, and am at the gym (3 miles from my house) from 5:30-6:30.  When I get home, DH is getting DS and DD up, dressed, and breakfast while I shower and get ready for work.

  • Also, I either do a brick workout (bike, run) or a long run on the weekend depending on the season (summer is tri season!  :)

  • Now that DS is older I don't feel bad exercising when he's awake. I'll get home, chat with him awhile about his day, and while he is decompressing with his cartoons, I'll take a quick jog and be back in time to start his supper. On weekends DH and I try to get DS involved with exercise- we'll take him to the YMCA and leave him in the Kid's Gym for an hour while we work out, then we'll do something fun with him like swim in the pool.

I used to think I'd never be able to do the 5 am routine like many of the WM have attested to- but I did it for a month this summer, just to prove that I could. I bought a package with a trainer and got my ass kicked for an hour 4 mornings a week. It was great, and I feel good that I was able to complete it. That said, I do try to avoid this as it makes our morning routine quite hectic.

I also used to be a lunch hour runner, but I try to limit it to days that aren't so hot/humid because even with a quick cold shower rinse I can't stop sweating.

  • I have been taking zumba classes M, Tues, Thursday 630-730.  DH goes to the gym right after work and is home by 6/615.  Once he gets home I leave (I try to start dinner but he is the main cook in the house)  When I get home DD gets a bath and I read to her before bedtime. On Saturday's I have zumba from 10-11, and Sundays I run/walk on the treadmill for 30 mins at some point in the day.

Holy Moly. If my LO got up at 5:50, I definitely would just be skipping the work outs for now. Good for you, but I think I'd hate you if I actually knew you IRL. ;-)

ETA: As far as workouts, I try to do 2 - 3 lunch work outs per week (weights, just freshen up afterwards) and run Saturdays and Sundays, 2 - 4 miles each day.
  • I've been lurking for a bit, I am due in December, and trying to calm my fears of beig a working mom. I love this board and just wanted to share two awesome websites for quick, awesome workouts. Not sure if anyone has stumbled on either bodyrock TV or zuzka light, but both have short, intense workouts for the time crunch(and they are free :) ). I am a runner also and I am really hoping I can run/workout after baby. I'm heavily going to rely on those websites to help me get back into shape. Just thought I would share. Now going back to lurking till after December! You ladies inspire me :)
  • I work from home two days per week, so I either run or do a Jillian workout video on those days. Sometimes I squeeze something in on the weekend too, but that's about it! I used to be such a gym rat, but that's another life now.
