Car Seat question

When do you upgrade to a toddler seat? When can he face forward?

I'm still lugging Hayden around in his infant seat. He's still rear-facing and I plan to keep it that way, but his car seat just looks silly. I can't use the hood/sun shield thing because he's too tall. His head sticks out the top. And I have the harness on the tallest slot, but instead of the straps starting above his shoulders, they start behind him now. It would still do the job in a wreck, but I worry that he would be injured unnecessarily (I hope I spelled that right) due to poor fit.

He's 23 lbs. and really tall. I don't know how tall. I haven't measured in a while. He's wearing 18 months for length in arms and legs.

Can anyone help? I feel like an idiot.

Re: Car Seat question

  • It sounds like he should be in a convertible seat since his head is sticking over the top and wouldn't really protect the backward momentum for him in an accident. I would start looking for a convertible seat ASAP so that he could continue facing backwards until 2 at least, and then it flips around to face forward when he's a little older. Got the best of both worlds there. :) HTH!

  • Okay! Going today to get him a seat before I get him from daycare! Holy crap! I had no idea that we were supposed to switch when he was within 1 inch of the top... That's scary. I suck!

For the record, he's not like, all the way out the top. He's about an inch and a half above it. Not that it makes it any better... Sheesh... I feel awful...

Thank you all for your help!

  • The infant seats have a height and weight limit.  My Peg Perego one was 30 lbs, 30 inches.  If his head is sticking out over the top it is past time to change. It is pretty important that there head be protected in case of an accident.  My LO is small so we used the infant seat until she was 12 months and 29 inches.
  • I really thought your question was a joke. I mustn't say more for I may sound like the snarky judgemental biotch that this question is making me feel like. Just read the stickers on the car seat :)
