Discipline...

I don't think we've discussed discipline recently. I did a search on Amazon for a book to help me out, because I'm completely lost. My parents disciplined us in a very negative way, and while I know I don't want to do the same, I don't want my kid to be a brat either. I've looked at "Positive Discipline: The First Three Years" but the reviews are mixed and I don't have time to read a dozen books.

Anyone have a book recommendation? Or a method that worked for you?

I went the Montessori route. Which is basically redirecting. It doesn't always work but its better than hitting. We do a lot of redirecting and talking.

The book I bought was montessori from the start. I'm also gonna order one that @denisern reccomended: Montessori parenting.

Right now I just say "no" and redirect. He doesn't understand anything beyond that. When he's 2 or 3 we'll do time outs.

And this is why I love The Bump. My kid goes to a Montessori day care, and I've read some Montessori books on activities and such, but didn't think to look up what they offered from a discipline point of view. I'll probably end up getting one of these two books, or both. Thanks!

I haven't read any parenting books. I just redirect. I try to use words other than no too (ie "please don't touch the TV") because I don't want the word no to lose meaning.

Mine are two different books... Idk why my iPad hates paragraphs. I hit return between them.

I used to work at a day care where they wouldn't let us say "no." We had to say "sad news." It's not super effective to say "Sad news Katie, don't jump off the wall!"
