Describe teething (melly918)

My first baby went through it with little fuss. DD has put us through the wringer every night for about three weeks now. She wakes up every 1 1/2-2 hours. Sometimes she nurses eagerly, sometimes she just wants to be picked up, held or put into bed with us. As soon as we put her back in her crib, she gets mad! We are at the end of our rope. No Cry Sleep book isn't cutting it for us. We might go back to Ferber as soon as we move her out of our room. Now I am starting to wonder if she's teething. She's 9 months old and has nothing coming out yet. DS was about 9.5 months when his first tooth broke through. I am not seeing any differences in her behavior to suspect teething. She always has something in her mouth and always chews on the crib railing. No fever, no pain when we touch her jaws. What were your LO's teething signs?

Re: Describe teething (melly918)

  • For DD the main signs were:

    • a small fever
    • diaper rash caused by runny, acidic poo
    • Smelly breath - I don't know if this means anything but it smells like teeth.
    • Wakefulness at night.

DD's gums never hurt and she was always chewing on stuff.  If took me a while to realize that these were our signs.

  • Both my boys did really good with teething.  I did notice they were fussier when the back ones came in.  That's when they had issues sleeping and I pretty much let them cry because there was nothing I could do for them other than some Tylenol or a teether.

Could it be something else?  Too hot or cold in the room?

  • The biggest sign was to look into his mouth.  Bulging gums meant one was being worked on.  A white line visible meant it was imminent.  The day one breaks through he's  a fussy mess and usually whips his head back and forth like he's adamantly shaking it no...this is random, like midway walking across a room he'll start bc it hurts.

Have you tried a dose of Advil to see if it helps?

  • We just went through this last week! My DS is almost 9 months and just cut his first tooth about a week and a half ago. He was a little fussy during the day but not as much as night. As you described, he was up every hour to hour and half, back to his old horrible sleep habits! Even with meds he needed to be rocked back to a sound sleep to stop screaming. He was up and down all night. Defnitely had a bulge and then the white line. He continued the bad sleep habits for a while after the tooth popped so I had to do Ferber again with him. It only took one night luckily though.

  • I'm not seeing anything in her mouth yet. She saw the pedi last Wed and he felt around her mouth, nothing. The other day I noticed her face looked flushed around the jaw near the ears. I thought it was due to falling down but they were on both sides of her face, so now I wonder... She never seems to be in pain and calms the second we pick her up. I told DH once we get around to moving DS' bed into another room and moving her into the nursery, we will try Ferber again.

  • DS was extra fussy and definitely wake up at night more than usual. I noticed his first 2 which came at the exact same time and top 2 that also came at the exact same time were the worst. He had his 5th tooth pop out and I had no clue I saw it while he was eating. Advil or Tylenol didn't work much for him. Teething tablets did help. Anything in his mouth would relieve him. It didn't necessarily have to be cold. He never ran a fever but would avoid eating anything purée or not and really only want milk.
