Please to explain "LOL"

Can someone please explain the misuse of LOL to me?  I realize this questions probably makes me sould like I am 60 years old, but can someone deciper this text convo for me?

Me: Hey how was your weekend?

Friend: It was good lol

Me: Cool-- what did you wind up doing?

Friend: took B to the park lol

Has LOL lost all meaning?  This is a grown woman I was texting-- not a child.

Also, LOL is not the same as ha.  Hahahahahaha  makes sense.  lololololololol makes no kind of sense.

TIA

    Ryght?

I mean, I think she does, but she's not the only one that does this to me.

  • My friend/co-worker uses lol the same way. It's so bizarre to me.

I really don't like lol as an expression of humor. I'd rather right "hahahahaha" or "that's hilarious!"
    I agree!!!

  • Somewhat related, I also hate when people add an "lol" or smiley to something clearly douchy but then claim they were "joking."

I'm quoting myself to also state she adds a word or two in caps as well. She's the worst sentence offender possible. #cuntpunt

Please don't throat punch me @missyishere. I am very guilty of quotations and smiley faces. Never in a work email though. Ever.

  • I have a FB friend that ends everything in lol. Lol is not a period! Semi related: my mom said GFY to me the other day when I told her I was going to do something. I was like mom, what do you think that means? She thought it meant good for you.
Parents are so cute at that age.

  • That usage makes no sense. I don't use lol, but if I received that text "good lol", I would have expected like a funny story to immediately follow. Like "good lol. Won a radio contest for best Gilbert Godfrey impression".

  • There are so many newbs that do that. I picture them as someone that laughs every time they end a sentence IRL too. Which is obnoxious and makes me instantly hate them.

Yes-- it is almost like a nervous laugh-- but via text.

    Nervous laughers make me nervous.

  • This is different but related.

Over Labor Day weekend, my mom got my 12 year old cousin to "set her up with a Twitter," mainly I think so she can spy on my younger brother. I said something about how she was going to use Twitter to be a twat, and Mom smiled and said, "Yep!" I apologized later and explained to her that what I said meant something different than what she thought.
  • What about people that use "..." like after every sentence? I imagine that in real life they make all kinds of awkward pauses in their speech too.

HA!  I think you posted this the same time I posted my comment.

Aww...tha's cute too.  I think she probably means "thanx", which also hurts my eyes, but "thankx" is just precious.

This is my SIL. Literally.................super long ellipses......that don't make sense at all. This post also reminds me of one of my favorite Monk scenes where he's trying to fit in and be cool and says "that's enough to make me Lol out loud."

@Kjmashup - I did not LOL but you did get a genuine smile out of me and that's pretty good for the internet.
@Helenahhandbasket has such unhappiness over made up names with unnecessary x's.
Also I tend to overuse "haha" in texts as opposed to lol because lol annoys me.

I'm fine with ellipses in the middle of a sentence and will use them. But you can't end with ellipses...
