How are ya getting to the hospital?!

Re: How are ya getting to the hospital?!

  • My DH works from home and my oldest is 13 so we can just leave if everyone is home. Karate is 30 min away and I'm planning on him to start taking the kids instead of me. I do have friends who are SAHM that can drive me if I can't wait for him to get home. If I'm at the doctor's office by myself I will just wait for DH to come get me as the office is half-way between our house and the hospital.

Thinking back on my other labors, two were during the day and two were in the early morning. Hopefully this one will be early morning too.

  • If for some reason my body decides to go into labor before my c-section DH will drive me. The hospital we are delivering at is about 30-40 minutes away depending on traffic, but if there is an emergency then there is a hospital down the street from us, maybe 5 minutes away and we would just go there. My doc is really pushing the rpc because I've had two already and he's worried about the internal scar on the uterus coming open. Guess we will see how not all plays out.

  • If I randomly go into labor before Thursday my mom will have to take off work to keep DD while I take myself. After Thursday my grandparents will be here to keep DD, and my mom will accompany me to the hospital.

  • @losersaidwhat I barely recognized your straight-haired avatar.  I had to click it bigger to make sure it was really you and not an imposter!
I made the bold move of linking my FB account to my bump account and apparently when you change your profile picture it also changes your bump picture! I even had to double take myself honestly...

To be fair the curly haired me is a rare sight irl, so technically that was the imposter ;)
  • I have a couple diff scenarios planned out. I work at the hospital I'll be delivering at so if I'm already here great. My H will be working 2nd shift the 2 weeks leading up the the due date so if it happens while he's at work and I'm home my mother is insisting on coming to pick me up and driving me. Although I think I could drive myself, I'll let her drive me. Then any other time H will drive me if it's on the weekend or something.
  • As long as I don't go into labor at work, I will be fine. Depending on the time of day/traffic, it can take me anywhere from 1 - 1.5 hrs to get home from work. So that wouldn't really be ideal. I'm pretty much good to go if I am at home. DH works about 5 minutes from home, and the hospital is maybe 10 minutes from home. Also, it would be really rare for him to be in a situation that he couldn't step out whenever I needed him to. He probably spends half his time in court, but his presence there isn't essential to the proceedings, unless he needed to testify, but even that isn't very often. The other half of the time he is in his office.

The only exception to this will be the fact that DH is supposed to be out of town overnight from the 13th-14th (my due date is the 11th). He was accepted to a leadership program, and the only mandatory event is an overnight retreat that night. In that case I have a friend on call. DH will be 2 hrs away, but he'll make it as quickly as he can.

There are even rare cases, where the baby is born in the bag of water
This is often considered a blessing and when it happens, people will even save the fluid (they press it in paper or something).

  • My husband will be driving me. He only works 1 minute away. It's literally across the street from our apartment. If he's at school it'll take him about 5 minutes to get home. (We live on campus) We live right next to the hospital too. We're golden.

I'd say you'll be fine to just wait for your husband to drive you.

  • i thought clock started when your water actually broke?
That's what I thought, and what my OB told me, as well.  You risk infection as soon as the water breaks, and that only increases with time.
Same here. I was told if my water breaks, to call my OB and then go to L&D. It's not ONLY the exams that cause risk of infection--it's the fact that your water broke
  • My dh works an hour from town we live maybe a 10-15 minute drive from the hospital depending on traffic.. When my water broke with dd I didn't really contract for hours.. I ate breakfast, casually got dressed.. And headed down to L&D. If my water breaks this time ill probably call dh and see how things go.. If I contract strongly sooner ill call my mom if all else fails lol

  • Are you just worried about your water breaking or going into labor?

With DD1 I was already at the hospital when my water broke and with DD2 my water broke and I went in a couple hours later because I had tested positive for GBS and wanted to get the antibiotics in time.  If I hadn't had GBS I would have waited because I had 0 contractions for hours.

I would just set up a contingency plan.  DH is usually 30 minutes away unless he is in the field, then it could be hours.  But depending on the day and time I have people lined up to help me with the girls and me if necessary.  This includes having the number of a car service to pick me up and take me to the hospital if necessary, I already called ahead to make sure they would take me if I was in labor.
