'Regular' video monitor vs one for cell phones?

So when we originally started researching monitors, I wanted one that came with a screen but that you could also use your cell phone with.  Apparently these don't exist, or we at least couldn't seem to find them.  (So if you did, input on those would be greatly appreciated!!)  I've resigned myself to the fact that this may not exist, that you either have to do what I call a 'traditional' video monitor OR one that uses a smart phone as the monitoring device, and that's when the fight started....

Husband wanted the IP camera where we'd just use our cell phones because then we'd both be able to see in the nursery on our respective phones and he thinks it'd be cool to peak in when we aren't home.  Apparently some of these cameras got better reviews than the 'traditional' ones too.  However, when I think about this practically, it means that every time we have someone babysit, they have to get set up on the camera.  What if a babysitter doesn't have a smart phone or their cell phone is broken/left at home?  And when they leave, how do we make sure they can't pull it up on their phone?  (I was told I'm being paranoid about this but seriously, how weird would that be to know that someone could click a link on their phone to see us in the nursery with baby at 3 am?)

I appreciate any thoughts and especially any advice from people who have chosen one versus the other!

  • Do you have an iPad or computer? I have friends with the IP monitor, and they just leave their iPad or computer on, set to the monitor, for babysitters to use while they're gone.

We have both and that NEVER crossed my mind, wow.  Great call, that basically negates any argument for why I didn't agree with going the cell phone route!

My brother-in-law did mention something about not having the screen on all the time but I feel like that's something we can change our phone settings on and it isn't like those hand-held monitors have great battery life.  Thanks so much!

  • My phone is always dying now that I use it to track feedings, diapers, sleeping, etc. it would, never survive as a monitor too. Just a thought.

  • I have a summertime one that is a video monitor and allows you to use your cell or computer as a monitor as well. I love it! Or at least so far.
    Thank you,

  • We use Foscam for this.  I set up my Ipad on my night stand and my husband sets up a Nexus on his night stand at night time.  When our sitter is here, we give her the Nexus to use while we are gone.  We actually bought the Nexus specifically for this purpose when there was a sale over mothers day weekend this year.

  • Awesome, thanks for all of the input!  I'm going to look into the Summer Infant monitor, that sounds perfect.

  • The summer infant peek plus doesn't get great reviews on BRU.  3 out of 5 stars with 71 reviews.  I personally don't invest in something that expensive (almost $300!) without at least 4 stars.  I'd consider this before purchasing.  I'm in the market for a new video/IP monitor as well so I'll be watching this thread.  Good luck!
