High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre Term Labor

So I am 32w 6d and I am currently in the hosp in pre term labor. Came in with mild contractions about 4 every 10 mins. They checked me and I am about 2cm and 80%effaced. Not too terrible. They have started me on magnesium and steroids to speed up king development. They are hoping to stop contractions and pre term labor. Anyone else had this. Were they able to stop it. I hope he will stay cooking for another week or two At least. I am high risk due to shortening cervix.

  • That's lung development not king.

  • I've been in the hospital twice for PTL. Just got out today. I'm also high risk due to shortening cervix and because I'm having twins. I got the steroid shots at 24 and 29 weeks. Yesterday my contractions were 6 min a part they spaced out to one every hour so they let me go home. I'm 2 cm dilated and 50 percent effaced. I never had the magnesium. I'm on pacordia though. My FFN test came back positive yesterday as well. My drs are hoping I get to 32 weeks but I'm really hoping I can make it further than that! Good luck and I hope your contractions stop and baby stays put for a while longer!!

I had this happening when I was 28w5d . Went to L&D with contractions 3 minutes apart. They kept me there for three days to monitor both of us. I was also given steroid shots, IVs with three bags of fluid, procardia (first dose 3 pills at once, and then 2 a day for the remaining time there). However, through all the contractions my cervix never changed in any way. So yes, they were able to stop them, but I still have to take Procardia pills until 35 weeks and am on bed-rest, luckily at home ^^'

Edit. My ob/gyn also told me that after 35 weeks labor will not be stopped. Also the procardia is only there to slow down the contraction not eliminate them.

  • I am currently in hospital for PTL.  I'm 27 weeks today and have been here for 9 days.  I had mag and steroids on day 1.  All calmed down, but since I am so early I am staying here for a while.  Had a minor PTL scare 3 days ago.  Ended up in L&D (currently reside in antipartum-sp?) for about 6 hours with a bag of fluid.  No mag.  I am 1cm dilated and 75%effaced.  I think mag works for a lot of women.

    Good luck and keep baking!!

  • I went into PTL at 24wks and again at 34 weeks. They were able to stop it both times with tribudaline. I was sent home both times on strict bed rest and a px for procardia every 6hrs which has definitely helped. I'm now 36wks and very hopeful ill make it to full term (4 more days). Listen to your doctor and if you need to be on bed rest try to relax and enjoy it. It really does help.

I was not dilated but I have heard that you can be dilated for weeks even after PTL. Wishing you the best and a few more weeks!

  • i'm high risk due to shortening cervix as well. Had no trouble at all..at 34 weeks I started having regular contractions. Went to L&D and found out that I was 70% effaced. I will be 36 weeks tomorrow and still at 70%! I am on br now due to high bp though! if its not one thing, its another! good luck and stay off your feet as much as possible!
  • I just left the hospital from preterm labor. Went in Monday with bleeding and contractions every 3 min apart. Was transferred to a different hospital with a higher level nicu just in case. I was on mag for 24 hours which finally stopped the contractions and will stay on procardia. I am also 2cm dialated and having contractions still every 10-30 min apart but was sent home yesterday back on bedrest. With a 3 year old at home I'm a little nervous but I'm focusing on milestones. Right now hoping for 32 w then so on. Good luck and stay positive!
  • Like others, I am in the hospital right now for PTL at 29w6d.  My cervix has shorted to around 1.5cm and I am 70% effaced.  I have been here since Monday.  When I first came in they had me on an IV and mag drip.  After that I switched to procardia every 8 hours.  My contractions have stopped, however I have what they are calling an irritable uterus.  On Monday I see the MFM for another u/s to see if things have gotten worse or stayed the same.  At that time I will find out if I am going home for bed rest or not.  I am not getting a FFN because my DS was preterm so my doc if assuming I am at risk either way.  Good luck, hopefully your contractions stop!

  • I went in at 32 weeks. They did the stop the contractions. I was high risk as well because my 1st was born at 34 w. Then I went back at 34 wks 2 days apart. They were able to stop labor but I had contractions to 39 wks. When I had happy healthy baby boy. Good luck to all in the hospital.
