Baby Names

Jacqueline / Jacquelyn

edited September 2013 in Baby Names
This name is on my short list if we have a girl but I'm undecided on spelling. Nn would be Jackie.

I am not a fan of unique spellings but We would pronounce it the American way (jack-wa-lyn) so I'm hesitant to use the French spelling.

Which spelling do you prefer?

Re: Jacqueline / Jacquelyn

  • Also I've never heard anyone say Jack-wa-Lynn. Maybe it's a location thing but I live near Chicago and a cousin of ours is Jack-uh-lynn pronunciation.

  • My name is Jacquelin and everyone pronounces it jack-Lin. I mostly go by Jackie though hope that helps! I love my name!

  • I've only heard Jacqueline pronounced zhak-leen or jack-wa-Lin. I don't like jack-uh-Lin. It's only a subtle difference.

I've seen Jaclyn which would be pronounced jack-lyn.

Quoting helps. No idea who you are talking to, but I am assuming you mean me? Um, no one. I am in quite a good mood sweetie. If you didn't want honest opinions, you shouldn't have asked.
I did ask for opinions. But your response about pronounciation was rude as was "move on" comment.
  • I'm with the Jac-uh-lin pronunciation, but I can see Jac-wah-lin depending on the accent. That's one of those pronunciations that's so imperceptible that I don't think it's something you can police, I think it's just going to be based on where you are. I don't think pretty much anyone in a non-heavily French speaking area is going to pronounce it the French way.

Side bar, H and I have been watching Key and Peele lately and so now when I see the name I think Jay-kwellen. The Mr. Garvey sketch has warped a few names for me. :)

  • What? Jack-wa-Lin??? Like "wa" as in the beginning sound of "what"? That sounds like someone with a speech impediment or something....

  • Hmm perhaps it's regional. I'm in the Boston area and that's how I most often hear it. Jack a Lin reminds me of jack o lantern. Haha
  • Hmm... I'm in the Boston area, born and raised, and have only heard it as Jack Uh Lin.

    I love the name!

Both spellings are fine with me, but I like Jacqueline more.

I've never heard Jack Wa Lin. And I've never heard it with a Leen ending either.

Like one pp said, I have heard it pronounced with two syllables as Jack Lin but I think that's just lazy/wrong, unless spelled something like Jacklyn or Jaclyn.

  • I have never heard anybody pronounce this name Jack-wa-lyn, ever. I live in an area with a decent sized minority French population and unless the last name is also French, 99% of people will pronounce Jacqueline as Jack-uh-lyn. It must be your accent that is saying Jack-wa-lyn. If that's how you hear it there, people there pronounce it the way you want.

I really want someone from Boston to confirm the name is pronounced Jack-wa-lyn there.

  • I too have never heard Jack-wuh-lyn. It seems like you are trying to pronounce the "que" like "quiet?" in the middle of the name? Perhaps it is a regional thing, but I don't think it's technically how the name is pronounced? Behindthename.com does not recognize that pronunciation either: https://www.behindthename.com/name/jacqueline

I have to agree with the post-er who said if you don't like Jack-uh-lin, you might want to consider another name because that is how the vast majority pronounce it (with the English pronunciation).

I really like Jacqueline - beautiful name (and I am one who actually prefers the "leen" on the last syllable. So If I were to choose it, I'd likely just have to correct people. Would not change the spelling!)..
  • My husband is from Southern Maine.  I just asked him if the New England (NE) accent does this "WA" thing and he laughed in my face and asked if the person was doing a NE caricature of the "QUELL" sound (which in french has a qWELL sound to it, not qWA) or if they had a speech impediment.

And I am from Western/Northern NY (you know, near Quebec).

The name is pronounced Jack-uh-lin unless the person has a french sounding last name.

But if you are overly concerned with not having to go through life NOT correcting how people pronounce the name (you know other than choose a name that doesnt have multiple pronunciations), then spell the name Jacklyn and loose the center vowel sounds all together.

  • There's an audio file in this link which is how I would pronounce it.

We plan to use Jackie so I'm not sure if the differences in pronunciation is enough to keep me from using it.

Sounds like Jack-lynn to me if not, jack-a-lyn. Never heard of jac-wa-lynn either. I like the Jaqueline spelling.
