Toddler bed vs crib

My DD just turned one year old last week and I have baby #2 due in Feb. They'll be 17 months apart. DD is still in her crib and doing well in it. We haven't converted to the toddler rail yet. She's probably not ready for it yet. When did you convert the crib to a toddler rail? And how old was your LO when they switched to a toddler bed/twin bed? I already bought another crib for baby #2. It looks like I'll be using two cribs at the same time. Just looking for some advice! Thanks in advance!

Ours are 16 months apart. We didn't move out elder child into a toddler bed until he was 2.5 yrs old, when he started climbing in and out of it himself. Still, we probably would have kept him in it as he was still happy in it, but wih number three on the way, we figured we'd move him and have time for him to get used to it before number three arrived (it also involved moving him into his little sister's room, so it was quite a change!). We were very pleasantly surprised that he loved the idea (of room sharing and a bed), took to it te first night and there has never been a problem!

Mine are 17 months apart. I am waiting until at least 24 months to move my older child to a bed.

Ours will be 21-22 months apart. We plan on keeping #1 in her crib as long as makes sense. She has put a leg up, but only when we are in the room and she puts it down when we tell her to.

Thanks for posting this. I'll have #2 when DD is 19 months old. DH wants to move DD to a twin mattress on the floor and give #2 the bed, but I'm not convinced that she will know to stay in her bed or know what could be "off limits" or dangerous as she would at 24 mo. or older.

I am a fan of using the crib for as long as possible.  I already have 1 baby that doesn't sleep that great (DS) and I don't even want to consider moving DD until I absolutely have to.  She loves her crib and I see no reason to change things on her.
