Your SO and shopping

My H cannot be entrusted with any sort of shopping. He never sticks to a list and buys the most ridiculous shit. Sometimes I don't mind a surprise if it's fancy cheese and bread from Whole Foods, but usually it's an entire trunk load of junk like frozen corn dogs and weird chips. Stuff we won't eat and will just take up space.

If he takes DS, not only does he get him a toy, but a big one or one with lots of pieces. Grrrrr.

I'm not immune to impulse buys, but I have SOME restraint!

What about your SOs?

Re: Your SO and shopping

  • My husband is a tight wad, so he will buy exactly what's on the list and not an item more. He'll even pass something, realize he's pretty sure we're out at home and not get more unless he can reach me to confirm we need it. I am better at remembering what we're out of or what we need that wasn't on the list, so I buy a lot more than is on the list usually but it's only stuff I know we'll use.

  • I rarely send him shopping because he almost always gets something messed up, wrong brand, etc. When he does go, he'll pick up 1 or 2 impulse buys sometimes, but not much.

Maybe you should just start sending him with cash and telling him to stay inside the budget.

He'll impulse buy a bunch of junk food we don't need if i let dh do the shopping. I think dh goes grocery shopping once every six months if I'm sick or something.

  • DH will go to the grocery store if I beg him. He HATES the grocery store. He likes to have a very detailed list {I'm picky about brands} and gets nothing off list. Other shopping he's better about. He's been known to go shopping for DD with us and he'll sit through the entire fashion show and given opinions. He's got pretty good taste
  • He is actually pretty good about shopping.

  • I think DH has only gone shopping by himself once, after DS was born.  He did okay and stuck to the list for the most part.  However, he bought the cheaper brands of some stuff, couldn't find some of the items on the list, and he bought a bunch of the meals in a box to make things easier for me (we tried to eat one and then ended up giving the rest to the food drive).

  • MH is pretty good.  He often does the weekly grocery shopping (I put together the list and coupons and such) and takes DS with him so I'm not complaining!  He sticks to the list.  Occasionally he'll make some mistakes because he gets confused and he often calls me to clarify things.  He doesn't bring home extra things every time he goes, but occasionally a pint of ice cream happens to make its way into the cart!  He does tend to let DS pick out a Hot Wheels car and even though I don't really do that sort of thing it's kid of "their thing" so whatever.

My H doesn't really go grocery shopping by himself a whole lot. If I do have to send him he is pretty good about sticking to the list and getting what we need but then will throw extra random stuff on there. NBD. However if he goes to the store without a list, like going before or after work or something, it is ridiculous what he buys. The other day he stopped before work and got a huge canister of coffee, frozen jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches and a few other random crap foods he didn't need. Luckily all that stuff stayed at work with him. LOL.

ETA: Random after thought. I remember one of the first times DH and I went shopping together when we were first dating there was a 10 for $10 sale at the store and he was standing there chucking 10 boxes of popcorn, ketchup and something else in the cart. I asked him WTH he was doing. He legitimately thought that 10 for $10 meant that you had to buy 10 to get it for that price. I laughed so hard after that.

  • DH was always the shopper when we both worked. Once I SAH and started cooking every night, I started doing the shopping. Now if he goes he'll call me a few times to get clarity or make a substitution if needed. He always gets things not on the list, but not a bunch of stuff. Maybe he'll put in a box of Popsicles or something.

  • Yeah, mine is on a weird diet. He has literally bought salami and pistachios and thought that could be dinner.

  • Mine also thinks 10 for 10 means you have to buy 10! One time he bought 10 2 litres of coke and 10 bags of carrots. I sent him to get treats to watch breaking bad with lol!

  • The only shopping DH does is online or at Lowe's :)  He hates it and isn't very good at everyday shopping.

  • he only gets the mustard but why not eat it with ketchup? he doesnt know.
  • Mine sticks to the list. He is much better than I am. I am the impulse shopper, if I make a list (which I rarely do) I still forget things on it. I buy random stuff that doesn't go together, which means I go to the grocery store multiple times a week.
  • Apparently my DH has forgotten how to grocery shop since I started doing 99% of it. He did the shopping trip before his parents came to visit (with a list and everything) and he got confused by the sales and didn't buy the right soda because he thought Pepsi One was the only one in the whole aisle that wasn't on sale (uh, wrong, when Pepsi's on sale it's on sale!), paid the full sucker price of $4.79 for a box of Hot and Spicy Cheezits, and argued with the cashier because he couldn't find the discount on something else on the receipt.

  • Mine comes home minus half the list with all name brand stuff because he's too impatient to comparison shop.  If he doesn't have a list, we get chips, salsa, cheese, mountain dew, juice with funky flavors, bananas, and poptarts.  I promise those are the exact things he would bring home. Maybe beef jerky too.  Football food I call it.

  • H always gets exactly what I tell him, plus a surprise treat like cupcakes or ice cream. Sometimes, I send him to the store if I feel like something sweet but don't want to feel guilt for buying it. Like the calories don't count if its a "surprise".
this is DH too-- sticks to the list and bring a couple of surprises back for cheat days :)
  • I do most of the shopping but if DH comes with me, I swear the bill doubles!! I try to stick to the list, while he's tossing in hard pepperoni, fancy cheeses, fancy olives... all sorts of expensive snacks!! But it's his hard earned money buying the groceries so I don't say much lol.

  • DH never goes grocery shopping alone.  The only exception was when I was on strict bedrest (over 4 years ago) for 3 months & he really had no choice.  He will occasionally go with me & DD & we do end up with other things.  He travels most weeks so I will forgive him for not doing any of the grocery shopping.

  • DH rarely goes to the supermarket by himself, if he goes it is typically just for a couple items for a specific meal.  Most of the time he can stick to the list but he has no idea what a good price is and will often spend too much and/or buy the wrong brand. A couple weeks ago he picked up a loaf of bakery bread from the supermarket for grilled cheese sandwiches and spent way too much for that store; for what he paid I would have bought something from an actual bakery in town. He also can't remember to write things on the whiteboard list on the fridge.  As a result, he had no milk for a few days this week because I didn't get to the store and had no idea he was out.

With all of that being said, he likes to go grocery shopping with me.  Sometimes I like the help especially now that we have DD but he takes forever so other times it is a huge pain.

  • If I let DH do the weekly shopping it probably would be double in size and cost. He has expensive taste and will buy without looking at cost.
I love when he does shop on occasion because he finds stuff that I'd either never buy or never think to buy.

  • He always gets insane brands or versions of the things on the list...I am much pickier about the items we use. So I primarily do the grocery shopping anymore.

He also is now banned from purchasing more than 4 donuts at a time - he was coming home with a dozen donuts for the four of us (we don't eat them regularly, but sorta often). Anyhoo, I somehow won that argument, he has reformed his ways ha ha.

  • Sometimes we go together on the weekends but he will go by himself if I'm feeling lazy and just want to stay home. He even takes the baby to give me a break! I will bring DD with me while he's at work if we are going to be really busy that weekend. I just hate grocery shopping. We always meal plan or make the list together.
  • My dh doesn't shop in stores. I do all the shopping. The last time he shopped online we had a new computer, a new tv and a foonf car seat shoe up at our door. I had said I wanted one to try out, so he figured it would help with my aggression a towards the new electronics. We have separate a accounts for fun stuff so it wasn't coming out of my money. My part time work from home job, helps with the kids expenses and gives me money for going out for lunch and other items
  • I can call DH and ask him to pick up milk on the way home. I will also get chips, olives, sugar cereal and donuts that way. He is the one that brings junk food into the house. If he shopped all the time I would weight 400 lbs. He has been mostly banned from shopping because he will double the grocery budget.

In his defense, he does has a knack for finding that odd ingredient. If I am making something new and can't find an ingredient in the store myself, I will send him.
