Princess

edited September 2013 in Baby Names
Dont worry I'm not planning on naming a child Princess (what if it was for a boy, hahah!).
DH has taken a habit of calling DD princess and it kind of bothers me. I want to tell him to stop. Am I being crazy, do you think it's an acceptable nickname or should I talk to him about it? His other nicknames for her at the moment are bug and bear-snack much cuter and age appropriate IMO.

ETA for mobile users, DD is 10 months old

Re: Princess

  • I detest the name or nn Princess so I'm with you!  Bug and bear are much better imo   I would def. have to say something to DH
  • the first time I hear DH call our daughter princess I'll make sure it's clear that'll be his last! Ha ha, he actually agrees with me, not liking that NN, so I don't have to worry.

My point is, I think if the name bothers you, you should be clear about that with him, sooner than later because habits can be hard to break

  • I'll be the odd one out and say I don't mind it, but I think it'd have to be one of those NNs that only Daddy uses.  I'd be more worried if both parents were calling their LO princess.
  • I call my daughter princess sometimes but she has several other pet names. I guess I don't really put that much thought into it. FWIW DS is also occasionally called the little prince.

I don't know - I'm sure he means it in a cute way, but for me, being called princess never sounds like a compliment, even growing up (though I was a tomboy, in all fairness).  How on Earth did Bear-snack happen?  Haha, that's one I've never heard! :)

We spent a lot of weekends in a cabin in the woods this summer to get out of the city. there were a bunch of black bear sightings in the neighborhood, a mom with her cub. I think DH said something about how we had to be careful because DD would make a good snack for a bear. And that's how she became known as bear-snack.

  • Princess seems to mean something different than it does for woman. It would bother me too. I'd still let him call her princess though. To him, she is.

This! Girls are naturally daddy's little princess...I also think it's cute when LO is young but after 3/4 I think it's outgrown.

  • It wouldn't bother me.

I once worked with a girl who went by the NN Princess outside of her family life (ie at work).  I couldn't handle it.  I was her supervisor and I just completely avoided calling her by name.

  • I really hope no one calls my LO princess. If they do I will immediately be putting a stop to that. I even refused to buy her any clothes that say princess on them. I don't want her having a false sense of reality like a lot of this princess crap causes.
I really think bear snack is cute though.
  • Meh. We call our girls a million cutesy things. That doesn't mean we're raising them to be entitled or prissy. I can't imagine "correcting" a NN DH had for one of the girls. It's just an expression of affection; not a lifestyle choice.

Agree with both of these. We have a lot of cute NN for our LOs & my parents have a whole other set too. I have a NN that only my dad has called me my whole life too. It's just something between father and daughter.

  • I'm with you.  This would bother me, and I would say something to my H in a way that did not hurt his feelings but made my feelings clear.  He probably means only the best, and he's not even thinking about the implications of calling his little daughter "princess."

I have a big problem with the whole concept of "Daddy's little princess."  I just never wanted to set my DD up with the expectation that she be... whatever it is that we think of when we call someone a princess.

  • Giggling over "bear snack" lol.

I agree with @neverblushed about the Princess thing.

  • I personally find this really silly. If DH was actually treating DD like a princess then I could understand the concern and would tell him to stop, but if he is just calling her princess as a term of endearment then I think that's his right and place.

  • I want my daughter to grow up knowing that her dad thinks she's a princess. But when I think princess I think classy, respectable, worthy of praise.. Not like stuck up, snooty, thinks they deserve everything. We raise our children differently than that, so my H calling my DD princess wouldn't give her any indication that she can act any different than how we're raising her to behave. It's a cute nn, not a lifestyle choice.
  • Thanks everyone. I'm glad to see Im not the only one who thinks it's weird. I asked DH "Don't you think it's weird to call her princess? It kind of bothers me" when he called her that last night. He seemed really hurt. He said of course she was his little princess (and went on about how she's the lady of House Swanson and he's the king of the seven kingdoms and protector of the realm ... Someone has been watching to much Game of Thrones, haha!). I think I may let it go, I still cringe at it but like some of you said as long as it's his special pet name for DD and no one else calls her that its not the end of the world. It is sweet.
