Anyone taking Allegra (fexofenadine)?

My doctor doesn't like the idea of it -- she'd rather I stick to Zyrtec or Claritin -- but she's pretty liberal and she says it's still up to me. I've researched it quite a bit (not just online; in actual drug books) and can't find any solid info on it in regard to pregnancy. A couple of sources cite spontaneous development of heart valve defects in adults with long-term use, but most just say not enough data exists.

I've already survived one pregnancy without it, so I doubt I will take it this time either, but I'm still curious about what makes it less safe than the first-gen antihistamines.

Has anyone's doctor okayed Allegra for allergies?

Re: Anyone taking Allegra (fexofenadine)?

  • I have bad asthma and I was told I can take my daily allegra and singular. The only thing they changed was take me off allegra D. But my fertility doctor and OB is fine with this drug. It's on the okay list.

  • @mcgeeva That is good to know! I have nasty hayfever, and I'll be going through two major allergy seasons with this pregnancy. Zyrtec alone doesn't get the job done. I might push her on it or at least ask her why she's against it. Could just be that she doesn't know enough about it.

  • Thanks, ladies. I'll push a little harder. If she says no, I might just take it anyway on the really bad days. There's no way I could do Benadryl this time around and still function well enough to take care of a 2-year-old.
