Abigail Virginia

DH really likes the name Abigail Virginia. To me it sounds so colonial Williamsburg or something. I feel like our baby would have the name of an 85 year old woman. Although, maybe my opinion is an unpopular one. I'm just curious what others think. FYI, he has always liked "Abigail," and "Virginia" is 3 out of 4 of our grandmothers' names, plus MIL. Feel free to provide alternate name suggestions that are similar - first names with "Virginia" as middle or other names.

Re: Abigail Virginia

  • I really like Virginia & love that it has a family connection. I've never been a fan of Abigail.

  • I love it. I would definitely use Virginia because of the family significance. Abigail is a favorite of mine despite its popularity, and since it's a classic name in widespread use these days. I don't think it sounds like an old lady name. The two names together sound beautiful and strong.

There are way too many babies named Abigail out there for this to be true, in my opinion.

Besides, babies are only babies for a short time. They grow up quickly and become adults.

I like Virginia, especially in the MN spot. I despise Abigail. I think the /ig/ sound in the middle of it is really unattractive, and the NN Abby is like nails on a chalkboard. Clearly this is a UO, though, since it's so extremely popular. If you don't Ike the name combination, you might ditch one and keep the other as a MN (for the family significance) and find a new name you both like as the FN.

  • @Scarlett&Gatsby, do you have any other ideas for first names to go with Virginia? I don't like Abigail for a number of reasons...its popularity, the way it sounds with our last name, the fact that our other child is John (too much like John and Abigail Adams), and when I was in college my roommate had a dog named Abby who was a terror. I just haven't been able to talk DH out of it.
  • Like them fine together, but Virginia especially is just great!

    Some other ideas:
    Virginia Mae
    Kinsley Virginia
    Cecilia Virginia

  • I like both names, but not together. It does feel too colonial/old to me. Abigail Virginia also has a country twang to it. Follow your instincts - maybe use one and save the other?
  • Abigail is super popular where I live. Have you checked in your area?

I really like it. Abigail has been quite popular for the last 10-15 years, so I'd guess most people today would imagine a young child if they heard the name. If Virginia is such a common family name, I think it works well as a middle.

If you think Abigail sound like an old lady, what kind of first names do you like?

  • I don't think it sounds old lady, and they're both ok separately but it definitely sounds colonial.

  • I really like the name but Abigail is in the top 10 which would be a deal breaker for me. Unless you are calling her Abigail Virginia all the time I don't think it's old lady. She will probably not be the only Abby at her school given how popular it's become
  • I love the name but I do agree that it sounds very "colonial Williamsburg" haha. This is not a bad thing though and would not deter me from using the name.

  • The name Abigail haunts me! It is the only name that my husband loves and, while I think it is a pretty name, I don't want it for my little girl. I love Virginia though. Good luck! This name thing is really difficult, LOL

It depends on the kinds of name you like, but here's a few:

    Evelyn Virginia

    Scarlett Virginia (maybe too Southern?)

    Rosalind Virginia

    Marlo Virginia

    Harper Virginia

    Grace Virginia

    Laurel Virginia

    Willow Virginia

    Piper Virginia

    Leighton Virginia

    Hadley Virginia

  • I'd love Virginia as a first name. Ginny is so cute on a little girl. So you could do Virginia Abigail or:

    Virginia Grace
    Virginia Claire
    Virginia Ann
    Virginia Marie
