Homeschooling

Really?!

So I can't find this board on my mobile and rarely post but... OMG! I was approached by some guy claiming to be the truancy officer the other day at the store! Holy buckets,  I was out with BOTH my kids and he told me that DD needed to be in school.  When I said we were homeschooling he actually told me that I needed to be at HOME and SCHOOLING.

Sorry, jerk, I ran out of bread. I wonder if I can file a complaint.  I was so stunned by the approach, I didn't really have a good comeback at the time.  My kids are young so I never thought anyone would think otherwise.  Do you have any good standby responses?

I would just say that we are on a field trip learning about commerce, and that it is really none of his business.  I'm also kind of a smart aleck in these types of situations so I probably would invite him to tag along for our lesson if he wanted to learn something.  Then I would probably ask him for his identification and credentials so I could contact his office about his lack of professionalism and understanding of his job, since nowhere does it say that I am required to be home to do school.

What a jerk.  I have yet to have anyone threaten me for being out with my kids during the day, but we definitely get a lot of "why aren't you in school" comments from strangers.

  • Wowzas.  I would have been pissed.  And I didn't even realize there were still such things as "truancy officers".  Really?!

  • Out of curiosity, what state are you in Tamara? Do you have rather strict homeschooling laws?

  • I used to have to travel 150 miles round trip for counseling appointments with my kids.......I often was asked why they were not in school when I'd stop by the grocery store to pick up items not carried in my local small town stores.  I usually just responded with dr appt.   I actually had one clerk respond with a disappointed "I was hoping you were homeschoolers."

The other fun one was since they went to a different school district the days off didn't always coincide.

IMO, the better answer for the truancy officer asking why the child was not in school is "He is."

  • Im in Michigan and our homeschooling laws really aren't that strict.  I think it was just some mean, grumpy person who just wanted to give me a hard time.

  • The best one is when my ds1 was in 6th grade.  We moved states over the summer break -- planned move so we didn't enroll him at the middle school in Arizona.  That fall, I got a call from the truancy officer from the middle school in Arizona asking why ds1 was not in school...umm, his school records were forwarded from the elementary school to his new school in Nebraska -- and even if we had stayed in Arizona he would have been going to a different middle school since I had divorced xh and had moved to a different part of town. So how this guy got the idea that ds1 should have been a student there I don't know.
