Well hello there surprise STD...

edited September 2013 in March 2014 Moms
Had my pap and cultures done last week at my appt. Got a call from my OBs nurse saying I have Tricho-something...
Asked my husband and he swears to God he has not cheated.

There was an issue of cheating one time like 4 1/2-5 years ago. *edit- me, not him*

Since then I have had another pap and culture done a lil over 3 years ago with DS and nothing came back.
My question is, could it have been missed the first time?? I've been in tears all day and I just don't know what to do. Obviously I am going to call tomorrow and ask all these questions. Just wanted to know if anyone else had input. I was too flustered to ask them today.

Re: Well hello there surprise STD...

  • I just looked it up and they can miss it on the pap but not the blood work. I am sorry you are having this problem. Make sure they treat your husband to or you both could be in the same situation again.

Again I am so sorry that you are going through this.

  • You had to catch Trichomoniasis from somewhere. Hate to say it, but it's the truth. You know where you have been, so I would not be niave... I highly doubt if you have had pelvic exams in the last 3 years that it would have been missed. Your husband needs to be treated also. This is a treatable STD, luckily... But where there are treatable STDs, there are often STDs that are untreatable. Good luck to you... I feel for you, you shouldn't have to deal with this at all, much less during pregnancy.
  • I am sorry you have to deal with this, I hope everything works out.

Did the pap & culture from 3 years ago specifically test for it?  I didn't think that they routinely tested for STDs with paps, but I know they do check for STDs at the first prenatal screening. If they weren't looking for it, you may have had it all this time without knowing (google search says that about 70% of people with it have no symptoms).

I would assume they did test for it the first time. They do this at every first prenatal appt. I am going to call and ask if it's in my records. Surely so...

I am not being naive. I don't have an honest to God reason to believe he did cheat. I am ashamed to admit that it wasn't him that cheated before. So I can't honestly accuse him of anything. That's why I'm asking if it could have been missed. We both have the medicine to be treated. And I will be going to get tested yearly now instead of every 3 years now to make sure!

It was a prenatal appt that I had the 3ish years ago... So that's why I am assuming they tested for everything. That's what they told me anyways. Like I said, I'm calling tomorrow to double check... I'm just upset I guess. Stupid post since I am just saying the same thing everyone else is...

I'm sorry you're going through this, but it seemed obvious in your OP that it was him that cheated previously....without clarifying (as you did above) or just leaving that part out, it was very easy to assume your husband had cheated in the past, and now seems fishy that he may have again.  I hope you get some answers when you talk to your doc again.

  • Sorry I edited it in there
  • Nothing to add except sorry to hear you're going through this. Hopefully it can be dealt with quickly, and you and your DH can move on. FWIW, I have a girlfriend who had Trich for 2+ years before she had any symptoms and got treated (she was celibate for years after the relationship she must have contracted it from).

  • At regular paps they uuusssuuaaalllyyy only do gonnorhea & chlamidiya. Some places make you ask for std testing specifically for other tests.

I was trying to be attackful at all! I did assume it was him though! Either way I'm glad you are both getting treated!

  • Could your previous testing have fallen in the month or so window before symptoms are supposed to show up? I know it is possible with some STDs to have false negatives in that period.  I have also found in my curiosity reading on the subject that trich can be aggravated by pregnancy, so maybe you have had it for a period of time. Still strange that it would not show up on a test - but stds are strange things - the 4 1/2 to 5 year timing is pretty long though.  I'm so sorry this is happening to you right now. I am glad that your doctor caught it now, and that it is treatable.

Might be a good time to think about some counseling with your partner. You probably won't have the time or energy to hash out any of these issues once lo arrives, and even if he didn't do anything/never admits to anything, you can get a feel for whether his dialogue is genuine or not.  I wish you both good luck.  Infidelity happens, as you guys know, but it sounds like you have worked through it before and will put your family first.
