How old for heels?

Our neighbor's daughter had been begging for heels for ages, and I've noticed now that she has at least a couple pairs...she's six. And she wears them. They're like half an inch to an inch....thankfully my daughter hasn't asked for some. Would you let your kid have their own heels? Am I overthinking the age appropriate level? These aren't just for dress up either...

Re: How old for heels?

  • I don't have a problem with a small, chunky heel on a Mary Jane or something like that, if that's what the kid wants.

    My concerns would be more:

    1) Elementary school kids go out for recess and they're running all over the place, playing tag, chasing each other, etc. I don't want my DD to wear clothes that restrict her from participating in kid activities. She's got plenty of time to be subjected to fashion that's more form than function.

    2) Heels mess up your feet. My problems are probably a combination of being a runner and unfortunate genetics, but seriously, my DD should take note and save her heel-wearing years for her late teens and 20s. I'm only 30 and practically in granny shoes.

  • Yea these were like clicky clack heels...I noticed them because of their noise. I'm shocked they make them that small, but pageant girls need them I guess? I'm not sure if she wears them to school or not...I really hope she doesn't....but she does wear them walking around. Idk. I wouldn't even let my daughter have play heels because I'm a mean mom (maybe).

  • I saw a little girl (maybe 2) wearing plastic dress up heels to the blood work office. I told her I liked her shoes and her mom smiled at me and told me she refuses to take them off and since she had to get her blood drawn she wasn't fighting with her about shoes today.
I thought they were cute. But they were just chunky, she could walk around just fine.

  • DD2 is 6, and she has a few pairs of heels. I am fine with small wedges on her dress sandals, and she has a pair of fall boots with a very small heel as well. She enjoys them. They aren't her every day shoes, but I don't see any harm.

  • Like others said, a chunkier heel on a boot or even a wedge is nbd and dress up shoes are totally different.  But a legit heel for every day shoes?  No way.  School dances starting in middle school maybe.

My first "heels" were actually heeled tap shoes.  How's that for a challenge?  You've never walked in heels before but here, bust a move in these, complete with slippery taps on the bottom lol
