WEIGHT gain

So, I'm not totally stressing but I just weighed myself today and I have gained 25-30 pounds and I'm only 27 weeks pregnant! The doctor never says anything and she measures my belly and everything... But I'm just wondering how much has everyone else gained? And how many weeks are you?
I don't feel unhealthy and I think it's all belly but I don't know.. Jimmy johns might be a few pounds in there... But I am never full! How much more weight should I gain until the end of the pregnancy? I wonder!! Another 20-30 pounds? Yikes!

Re: WEIGHT gain

  • I've gained 25 lbs. and I'm 28 weeks on Monday. I started at 127 and now I'm 152. I've heard you gain about a pound a week in the last tri. So that would put me at like 37 lbs if I go 40 weeks. I'm not real worried about it. I'm eating fairly healthy but of course endulging in some cravings! I want some fried chicken right now...lol

  • Comparing yourself to others is totally irrelevant and also anxiety producing.

I agree. I don't see how a post with all of our weight gain will be useful or good for you with how you're feeling now
  • We just had one of these.. OP follow a good diet , your body knows what it is doing.

  • At this point you'll probably start retaining water weight as well, at least I am.

  • If you are uncomfortable with your weight gain then talk to you Dr about how you can slow it down a bit.  I always tend to gain more early and then taper off, like 5-7 lbs in the last 10 weeks so you don't necessarily HAVE to gain a lot more in the home stretch if you watch what you eat.  Your amniotic fluid levels actually get lower thus you have less weight associated with that, even though your baby is technically gaining weight.
Some Drs will say something to almost anyone who gains too much at one appointment while others will let it go and not say anything to almost everyone.

At my last appointment (24 weeks) my doctor said I'd gained 26 lbs, and she wanted me to keep an eye on what I am eating and slow it down. Yeah, it made me feel a little bad, but the same thing happened with DD and in the end I only ended up gaining 35-36 lbs total. So I wasn't far off the recommended gain at all. This pregnancy I have trended the same way....gaining quickly and early. I'm hoping to level off in 3rd Tri like last time. I'm also trying to make an effort to eat/drink smarter (replacing juice with more water, cutting back on sugary snacks, etc). Just talk with your doctor and you will figure out the best plan for you from here on out.

  • Thanks for actually posting an answer. Haha I just was curious. My doctor already ( obviously ) knows and I was just curious because some people tell me that you should only gain 25 the whole time! Just making sure I'm not alone... And now I know I'm not the only one! Woohoo!
  • Not so much concerned... Just curious to see I'm not alone! My doctor obviously already knows my weight and if its fine by her it's fine by me. As long as my baby is getting what he or she needs.

Everyone's pregnancy is different, so it's kind of hard to answer your question. If you're really that concerned, you should be talking to your OB about it.

FWIW, I've gained 15 lbs and I am 29w3d. However, I started out overweight and my OB told me from the beginning that they only wanted to see me gain about 20 lbs total. So, I've been watching that closely.

  • At my 27 week appt. I had gained 25 pounds. My dr. did bring it up. She said I need to start exercising and eating better but didn't seem too upset about it. She said I really should only gain a pound a week.
  • i stopped checking after about 22 weeks...i don't really see the point? if you are eating a balanced diet, and getting exercise - does it really matter?   Everyone is soo different, you can't compare yourself to anyone.
My girlfriend who is 17 weeks has gained more than I have, and she is eating very healthy. It's just her body doing what it needs to do.

My midwife doesn't even weigh me. She could see when I go in every 4 weeks if I've packed on too much. She asks if i want to know me weight, and I say no.

We get so caught up in how much weight we gain, thanks to  society always talking about it. If you end up gaining more than you "should" for your size - just make sure you watch what you eat and exercise once LO is here.

(However - if you are eating like total crap then yeah, you might wanna watch the scale.)

  • I am 28 weeks and have gained 29 pounds. My dr never says anything. I will be happy if I gain 40 ish total, but hope not to go over that. We will see :)

I've gained thirty five at twenty eight weeks. My midwives haven't commented yet. And to make matters worse, I'm a dietitian. I eat more than I used to, but not all that horribly in my opinion. You're not alone! 35353535
  • I agree if you Dr is concerned they will let you know.  Otherwise this just makes people feel bad.

  • I've gained 23 pounds at 28 weeks. At my 24 week appointment, my doctor made comments because I had gained 20 pounds in a matter of 8 weeks but I had also lost in the beginning due to morning sickness so I was due for it to catch up to me.

  • This is most likely the most sensitive area to discuss on the board, and I am pretty sure you know by now that everyone's weight gain is different. I am surprised that you are bringing this up when so many people have voiced their concerns/insecurities/questions on this topic so many times already, unless you just don't the forums often enough. Please talk to your doctor if you are still unsure about how much weight gain is right for you.

    Mmmm muffins...
  • I had gained 35lbs at 26 weeks, I was eating healthy, had good portion control, and walked about an hr everyday. In only 1 week I gained I 5lbs., I called my dr. to voice my opinion, and she told me to cut down on sodium and carbohydrates. I ended up getting preeclampsia. Don't be afraid to voice your concerns, only you know your body and eating habits, so you should know if your concern is legitimate or not.

I've gained 10000 pounds ... Do you feel better? :)
  • I've gained 7lbs at 27 weeks. I'm 5ft 4in and started at 135. I should have been 110-120 pre-pregnacy so for me I was much heavier than I should be starting out due to a back injury. I have a very small frame. The doctors don't seem worried with my small weight gain at this point. The baby is measuring right on track.
As everyone else said try not to compare yourself to others. I'm sure if I would have started out at my "normal" weight I would have a gained a lot more by now.

  • I've gained 12lbs now a little over 29 weeks.  Everyone is different.....if your doctor isn't worried you shouldn't be either.  Just be sure to keep eating healthy and moving as much as you can!
