If you had your membranes striped come in!!

I am trying for a VBAC and my docs will not induce or let me go past my due date. Today I was told if I wanted they would strip my membranes next week (39 weeks) but that is really the only thing they will do to help me along. I am at 2cm and 50% effaced as of last week. So my question in did having your membranes striped help or just make you uncomfortable?

Re: If you had your membranes striped come in!!

  • I don't have any experience on membrane stripping, but you may want to talk to an acupuncturist, chiropractor or reflexologist who specializes in fertility/pregnancy, as they may be able to help!  Acu and chiro may even be covered by insurance.  Good luck!

  • I had it done yesterday, it hurt and I've had some cramping, mild contractions. I don't know if it did anything, so I son't have any real advice.
If you do have it done, expect some spotting.

I had my membranes stripped on Tuesday and it hasn't done anything yet. I had some pretty bad contractions that night but they stopped after a couple hours. My doc said that if nothing happens within 72 hours that it didn't work. When he did it, it didn't hurt me at all. To me, it was just a cervical check with a bit of extra pressure. I'm having it done again on Monday if needed.

My opinion, I think that it's a 50/50 chance if it will do anything and the pain will affect everyone differently so I just wouldn't worry about it too much. It can't hurt to try.

If you do it, I hope that it works for you and you get the labor you want!

  • Sorry your not going to like my story. I was 2 cm and 50% when they did mine at 40 weeks 2 days. I'm now 9 days over due. But it's different for everyone.
  • I had my membranes stripped at 39wks.  I had it done on Sept 5th I started feeling contractions and had bloody show early in the morning on the 6th contractions continued the entire day and by 8:30pm on the 6th my water broke.  I was admitted the hospital that night at 9:15pm and gave birth to my little girl at 11:53am on the 7th.  So for me it worked like a charm. But just keep in mind that everyone is different and it may not work for you like it did for me or someone else.

  • Had it done Monday. Didn't really hurt, just a little extra time and pressure while getting checked. I was 2.5 cm, 50% effaced. I've been or have lost my mucus plug since then. Went in today because I thought my water broke.. Nope. But I am 3cm now & 50-60% effaced and -1 station. Midwife thinks it could be anytime if my contractions would stay! :)
  • I had it done yesterday at 40+5 weeks, was already 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced but I thought it couldn't hurt to try to get this show moving. Hurt like an SOB getting it done! All I appear to have gotten out of it was a sore cervix :(
  • Had it done on Monday. I was 2cm and 75%. Had contractions last night, but they've calmed down quite a bit since. Not sure if they're from having the sweep or just normal. So far it hasn't sent me into labour, but it couldn't hurt to try.

  • I was 4 cm and 80% when I had it done. For me it didn't cause any discomfort, but it also didn't do anything to move labor along.

  • I had mine stripped yesterday (40 + 3) and I was 50% effaced, 1cm. It just felt like light period cramps for like 10 seconds, not at all painful. Since then I've been having more intense contractions, but it's been 24 hours and I'm still not in labor.
  • Had mine done at 38 and 39 week appts. I was 1 cm & 75% at 38 and only up to 2 cm at 39 w. I'm 40 w and no labor yet.

  • I had my membranes stripped at my 40w appointment on Friday, Sept 6. I was 1 cm, 50% at the time. It was just pressure to me, not really painful. I had some cramping and very little spotting. The next day I had my first acupuncture treatment. On Tuesday, Sept 10 I had my membranes stripped again. I was 3 cm at that appointment. My midwife was a bit more aggressive than the OB I saw on Friday had been so it was a bit more uncomfortable and I had more spotting after. She was confident I would be in labor in 1-3 days. She was right!

Thursday night I had another acupuncture treatment. I was having more regular but painless contractions about 8 min apart. 3 hours later my water broke and soon after I had painful contraction 4 min apart and 3.5 hours later, early Friday sept 13, my daughter was born. Not sure if the acupuncture and/or membrane stripping brought on labor but I think the combination probably helped accelerate things for me. Good luck!
  • Ok well thanks ladies! I kinda expected these responses so it is not too much of a disappointment. I will do my best not to get my hopes up but I will still cross my fingers =)

I had mine stripped yesterday at 39.4. 1cm, 0% effaced, and baby still way high. I was almost in tears from the pain. Took about 5 minutes of sheer hell bc the Dr couldn't reach my cervix. I was super sore yesterday and had killer cramps, spotting, and possibly some bh, but no contractions. Still cramping today but no contractions either.

Edited to add that I had mine stripped twice with DD, and I still had to be induced.
  • I had it done with my last baby and had her by the next morning. At that time I was 2 cm and 70% effaced. I had it done today and had a lot of contractions afterwards which have calmed down quite a bit so we'll see if anything happens tonight. Today I was 3 cm and over 75% effaced.

  • I was almost 3 cm dilated, 80% effaced when I had mine stripped at 39w 1d.  Started having contractions 8 hours later, delivered DS 31 hours after contractions started.  I had been dilating for a month and DS was low ( -1 station) for almost a month as well so hard to tell if it was because of the stripping or if it was just time.  Good Luck!!

  • My membrane stripping started painful contractions which lasted 5 days. I did ultimately go into labor on my own, but I don't know if the contractions helped me along or if I suffered needlessly.

  • I had mine done at 39 weeks on a Monday and went into labor Wednesday night. I have no idea if the stripping did it or affected anything. It was about 48 hours after it was done it started. I had it done with DD1 and it didn't work.
