Preemies

Should I get the Progesterone shot or not for 2nd pregnancy???

I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant with baby #2. My first pregnancy last year ended early at 32 weeks due to prePROM. Luckily my DD (3lbs 9 oz) was born healthy and did not have any issues. We had an uneventful 3 week stay at the NICU. Last week I asked my OB if I should get the P17 shots weekly to avoid another early baby. My OB didn't think it was absolutely necessary since baby #1 was born fine and late pre-term. We have no idea why she came so early, but all is well now. I don't really want to bother with the weekly shot if not necessary. My OB referred me to a specialist and said it's up to me. Any thought Ladies? Thanks for your help!

  • It gave me quite a bit of peace of mind to get the shot. It was expensive, though, because my insurance didn't pay for it. Some people have uncomfortable side effects from it, although I didn't.

I think if it was me, I'd ask myself how I'd feel if I refused the shot and had an earlier preemie? What does your doctor think are the risks of you having another one?

  • DS came at 34w6days and even though he was my first and I might have missed some contractions along the way, we really had no warning he'd come early.   I started the shots with DD at 17 weeks and ended up in triage for the first time at 24 weeks (and again at 28 and 31).  The only thing that kept me from being admitted was my negative fFN and the fact that my cervix was closed and long.  I can't say for sure that the shots helped, but I felt a lot better taking them to be safe.

  • Dd was born at 33w3d. I've spoken with my ob about ttc in the future and she says I qualify for the shots and she would recommend it. There was no for sure reason why she came early. I had some health issues the week prior that probably contributed to it but don't know for sure.

  • I had DD at 32 weeks due to PROM. At my 6 week PP appt, my OB said she'd like to talk about my next pregnancy and that she definitely recommended the shots next time around. Said they have good success and it's worth attempting to avoid another preterm delivery.
