What kind of Sushi can I have?

I am having some serious Sushi cravings which is weird becuase I rarely have it. So I have no idea what kind is cooked and what kind is uncooked. I know California rolls are ok but other than that I'm at a loss. Any other names that are cooked?  TIA!

  • I don't know much on this topic (sorry!) but you can also have some things like any sushi that is tempura, avocado rolls, other vegetable rolls... Those things may be able to round out your order with whatever else other bumpies suggest!

  • I've had veggie rolls, tempura rolls...my fave is spider roll (fried soft shell crab)...it satisfies my craving. :) Oh, also had broiled eel roll...not a fave though.
  • Some places identify which rolls are cooked and which are not,  you could go that route or ask.  But PP mentioned some to look for, I believe eel is always cooked.

You can have sushi, its a common misconception - Sushi is permissible except for mackerel, shark, tilefish and swordfish. And don’t eat too much tuna — no more than 12. oz (about two maki, or rolls) per week.

The biggest concerns with it are 1. mercury and 2. parasites/bacteria because its raw, because they are hard to treat.  I have been told to limit intake and go to a trust well reputable place. If you have not had issue there before its highly unlikely you will this time.

  • I've been told that if your in a land locked State that the fish you would get in sushi would been previously frozen. So that means the tiny worms that are in the fish would be dead, which is the biggest worry of sushi. Then the next step of safety is how it is prepared so if the place is pretty trust worthy then you are most likely ok to eat it, since it probably didn't sit out all day.

  • They have a shrimp roll at my place called Hawaiian roll. Shrimp is fried kinda with coconut?

Spider roll is my faaavorite! I've had rolls with eel, shrimp, crab, soft shell crab and veggie since being pregnant. Yum!

Even if you're not in a landlocked state, most sushi fish (and most fish in general, unless it is farmed or fished locally) is flash-frozen on the boat. "Fresh" fish is not as common as it's made out to be.

Think about it: tuna boats are out in the deep sea. There is no way they are making it back to land with a boatload of fresh tuna that would have to be eaten within days of arrival.

  • Be careful of cross contamination.  Most, (if not all) sushi restaurants prepare all rolls on the same surface.  I love sushi, but I am also paranoid so I will not be eating any while pregnant.
  • i'm eating lots of sushi this pregnancy- my dr said it was fine, because as the other ladies have said, its all flash frozen. just avoiding tuna. salmon & yellowtail are my favorites. yum.

  • This thread is making me want sushi BAD. I can't even get it within an hour of my home! :(

  • Crab is cooked - and anything tempura is always safe.  Honestly, I've caved and eaten some "real" sushi - and I was fine. Obviously you may want to do this at a nice restaurant that you really feel is trustworthy in how they handle food - and maybe not off of a conveyor belt :)
