Early risers

I'm sure this has been asked but my ds keeps getting up between 5 and 5:30 and it's killing me! He's mostly happy in the morning and seems ready to get up but still gets tired about 3 hours after waking. He's fighting the morning nap with the sitters this week and only take a one hour afternoon nap. His bedtime is 7 and some days he's cranky and we go to bed at 6:30 other days he's fine and it's closer to 7:30. Is there anything we can do to get him to sleep in a little later? Even 6 would be great! Or are we doomed to be morning people? I'm off to get coffee to make it through my work day...

Re: Early risers

  • I though we were doomed to a life of waking up at 5/5:30 too... We'd keep him up later, play around with his nap schedule, etc and nothing helped..... he finally just started sleeping later (between 6-7). I've found the perfect schedule is awake at 6:30/7, nap 11:30ish for about 2 hours, and to bed around 7:30. He sometimes cat naps around 5 on our way home from daycare but other than that, one nap seems to help him sleep later.

  • I would incremtally push him back. When we came home from Chicago, he was used to going to bed at 9:00 Chicago time meaning 10:00 DC time. It took about two weeks of slowly pushing him earlier and earlier and now we're back at an 8:00 bedtime.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I feel your pain!  Only we are the crazy ones waking DD up at the butt crack of dawn!

We both have long commutes and need to leave the house by 5:45-6:00.  The "plan" is to wake DD up at 5:30.  But most days its closer to 5:45-6:00.  She gets a quick diaper change, nursed, and she goes to the sitters (my cousin) in her PJ.  When she was younger, she'd go back to sleep until 7:00-7:30 at the sitters.  But once summer hit and my cousoin's kids were home, DD stopped going back to sleep.

My problem is with weekends!  Alot of the time she'll waks up at 5:45 or 6:00!  Yuck!  If she wakes crying its safe to say she's sstill tired, so I give her 5-10 mins.  If she's still a hot mess I go in there and nurse her, hoping that would put her back to sleep.  But usually then she's awake and ready to start her day.  If she wakes happy, I just let her play for a bit in her crib.  Until she starts calling out for "mama".  Sometimes she'll play and talk for 20-30 minutes. And I get a little extra sleep.  Then sometimes I'm lucky and she sleeps on weekends until 7:00!  Oh I love those days!  LOL!

  • I say wait it out. LO's bedtime has been 6:15pm for awhile and she went through a phase where she woke 5:30am for weeks, but lately she's back to 6/6:30 which has always been my goal. Though she still goes down for a  nap at 10am for her only nap of the day 10-noon.

  • I try giving a bottle/sippy if he wakes up wicked early, then put him back down and he'll sleep for another hour or so. During the week I have to wake him up at 5:45-6am, and on the weekends, he'll only sleep until about 6-6:30.  Boo!  I leave him in his crib for a while, until he starts becoming rowdy lol.

  • I say wait it out. Nene, 6, ifs still an early riser 630/7 even in weekends. That's just her personality. Thankfully, she can entrain herself though.
