Preemies

New here

Hello everyone!! I'm new here. I just wanted some advice. I'm having twin boys. I went into L&D on Aug 18 at 29 w 2 days. I had bad back pain on my right side with what I thought were Braxton Hicks. Well they hooked me up to the NST and I was having some irritability. They checked my cervix and said I had a shortened cervix and was funneling. I was told to be on home bed rest. The next day my doctor called me to see how I was doing. I was still having what I thought were Braxton Hicks and the back pain. He had me come back in. Again I was having real contractions and by Monday I was 1 cm dialated. He hospitalized me for 4 days. Silly me thought you only had contractions when babies were actually coming. Sorry first pregnancy. So I still have contractions daily. Last Monday Sept 9th I went back in. I'm still only 1 cm dialated but now I'm 50% effaced. If I'm changing what other signs will I notice. My contractions can be strong but I'm getting used to them. Friday I'll be 34 weeks. If babies come now are they going to be ok? I'm nervous and want them to be healthy. TIA. Michele

  • Welcome! You have done really well to make it so far. Hope you can continue and that if your boys have NICU time it is short and smooth!

  • Thank you everyone! I keep having contractions but the last time I was having them they weren't changing my cervix. But do they have to get stronger to change my cervix? Or can the maintain the same strength and still change my cervix? And I'm adding shooting stabbing pains to my crotch. I'm not sure if you can feel dilation. Pregnancy can be confusing. Thank you again for the well wishes!
  • Welcome! Every pregnancy is different so it's hard to say which contractions change your cervix or not. My girls were born at 33w 4d and have done well. Wishing you the best!

  • My little guy was born at 31 weeks but they were trying to keep him in until 34 weeks, saying he'd have a short stay in the nicu instead of the extended stay we ended up with. I had the stabbing pain in the crotch but it was actually just the bones in my hips/pelvis region being so relaxed that they were loose. My did it hurt! Keep those babies in as long as you can!

Pregnancy #1 EDD 1/20/13, D&C for unexplained miscarriage at 12w
Pregnancy #2 EDD 8/28/2013, Carson was born on 6/28/2013 at 31w - spent 37 days in the NICU
  • Our son was born at 33 weeks and is doing great. He had a 5 week NICU stay which was a week longer than predicted for his GA at birth. Dr was trying to get me to 34 (1st hospitalized at 26). In our 5 weeks at the hospital we met so many parents of much younger babies and heard so many positive stories. We were even told our 33 weeker was "old and big" by their unit's standards  which always raised our spirits They really work miracles there and your boys will be just fine. Hang in there and keep them in as long as you can...bedrest sux but I've seen the wonders it does and wish I knew what I know now while I was holding my little guy in I would've been much better about lying down 24/7
  • I started having contractions at 32w 4days. I was admitted, but my little babe wouldn't wait until 34 weeks and I delivered that night. She was perfectly healthy and never required any intervention or support with breathing or feeding. Sending you well wishes!
  • Aww thank you! Sending well wishes to you ladies as well!
  • I worked in early intervention for about five years and am now a mommy of a late preterm baby girl (born at 36 weeks), and I can tell you most of the preemies I've had on my caseload turn out fine! Developmentally the most common problem is motor delays, meaning they may not crawl or sit up on time, however most of the time they get caught up within a year or two of getting PT through our program and you'd never know anything was wrong. The longer you can stay pregnant the better but most twins are early anyway.
