Babywise?

I have never heard of it but seeing a pin on pinterest has me curious. Anyone hear about it or have any experience with it? All I gathered was is teaching sttn to you new baby. Is that even possible.

Re: Babywise?

  • I have a few friends who are pretty into the Babywise thing. It seemed a little too rigid to me and seemed like they were trying to sleep train super early. But hey, different strokes I guess.

  • Agreed, no good. Also I think the guy who wrote it has neither child development credentials nor children of his own, but I could be wrong about that.

  • I haven't read the whole book so take what I say with a grain of salt :) As I recall it seemed very rigid because it takes a strong parent-directed approach. While it indicated that babies' needs are to be tended to, it mostly took the stance that parents set the schedule and it's up to the baby to adapt. I'm not entirely against that idea of a parent-directed as a whole, but I think it doesn't leave much flexibility for things like individual differences in kids' temperaments, etc. And it seemed that this was to be set from the beginning (as in, right when the baby is born), which I think was the off-putting part for me. Trying to put a brand newborn on a tight schedule seems like an exercise in complete frustration to me.

As I said, I'm not well-versed in the subject, this was just my impression from friends telling me about it and reading snippets of the book about a year ago... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong! Maybe I'd have a different opinion or understanding if I were to actually read the whole book! :)
  • Huge thumbs down IMO. That's not the way I want to parent.... it just instinctively puts up a lot of red flags for me.

A friend of mine had great success with it with her DD, and is currently doing it with her newborn. It makes me really uncomfortable... but her DD is a healthy, happy little girl, as is her son so far.

  • I read it and followed it for my girls. I liked it until I had a kid that didn't naturally fall into that 3 hour schedule. DS just has a different schedule and I've learned to go with the flow. I used to defend the book a little, but now I'm eating my words. I haven't had near the supply issues I had with the girls and I have to wonder if it's because I threw out the idea of having any set feeding times with DS. The one part of the book that I still like is the eat, play, sleep pattern to the day, but Babywise isn't the only book with that idea, I think. Anyway, now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

  • It was given to me by a close friend. She's an awesome mom her kids are fantastic so I read it cover to cover, tried it for about 3 days until I just couldn't do it anymore. It felt so wrong to me. I did a little bit of research and found so much startling information about it. The author has no background in child/baby care, he is estranged from his only two daughters, his publishing company dropped him, his church excommunicated him...etc. It's linked with FTT, and the AAP, WHO and la leche have all spoken out against it.

Most babies aren't going to STTN at 8 weeks...it's just part of the baby package. Some kids (like mine) won't STTN until a lot later and that's fine too. They'll sleep eventually. There is no magical secret.

  • Well I'm a big fan on on demand feeding and I haven't slept through the night in months so what's another year? Doesn't sound like the thing for me.
@Auroraloo thank you for the book recommendations.

One of the only authors the AAP has released a statement warning against.
