First US not sure what to think

Sooo I went to day. Based on my calculations I am 6w along. When I called to make an appointment the triage nurse said that I should expect to hear a heartbeat during this appointment.

The doctor did both types of ultra sounds and was able to see the yolk sac and a tiny growth which she thinks is the fetal pole (too small to tell for sure). No heartbeat though. She said she estimates 5.5w along. On one hand I am glad to hear there is something in there but was disappointed because the triage nurse made it sound like I would hear a heartbeat.

Next appointment is 10/2 so I am praying that the baby grows between now and then! So much waiting!

Re: First US not sure what to think

  • I've been doing a lot of googling about u/s because I have one next Tuesday at 5w6d.  I've read that a heart beat may not be detected until 6.5-7.5 weeks so the fact that you couldn't hear one is totally normal.  Pregnancy is always about waiting but it's well worth it :)  GL to you!

  • This early just a couple of days makes a world of difference. Baby could have implanted a couple of days late and so much happens each day right now. Just try to relax.

  • This is why I never understand the point of an early u/s. It only causes more stress.

Well, early ultrasounds are typically for dating purposes only (based on measurements), not for hearing the heartbeat.

OP, I wouldn't worry, that all sounds normal to me.

  • Thanks everyone!

Based on my loss history I think they wanted to check to see where we were this time around but I agree it does cause added stress.

  • Its very normal to be a few days behind as pp have said. You could have ovulated late, or just have a slow starter. Try to stay positive and FX you get to see a healthy baby at your next appt.

Then be glad because that typically means you've had healthy/normal pregnancies. For some who have had losses or are experiencing problems the ultrasounds can be reassuring so long as they don't expect to see too much.

Not weird for those of us who are in the care of an RE or have had a previous loss (or both).

ETA: OP, hopefully it's just a matter of being a little too early. FX for your next appt.!

I don't think she said it as a way in which she has never had losses but she does make a valid point. Why u/s at 6 weeks? I don't mean to be bitter but I've had two successful early u/s and yet still miscarried after hearing strong hbs....So why u/s so early when it obviously (from the number of posts on here about this) causes alot of grief. As long as you aren't bleeding red, I don't see a point at all until at the very least 8 weeks.

  • This is my first baby and I have no prior health concerns and was scheduled for my first ultrasound at 6 weeks. My dr says its protocol for her and that particular office but its for dating purposes. I guess the timing depends on your caregiver
