2nd Trimester

Taking antibiotics while pregnant

So I've had to take amoxicillin during my first trimester for an absessed tooth but could not have the tooth removed due to not being at least 3 months pregnant. So here I am again, almost 16 weeks, taking more antibiotics due to the infection came back. I kind of have no choice but to take the meds due to the pain I've been in, but I just have a bad feeling. My doctor says that amoxicillin is one of the safe drugs that can be taken during pregnancy. And I am absolutely getting this tooth pulled once the antibiotics clear up the infection. Anyway just wondering if anyone else is or has had to take amoxicillin while they have been pregnant multiple times

Re: Taking antibiotics while pregnant

  • I took it in my first trimester.  I didn't know I was pregnant, but was trying so to be safe I had the Dr. prescribe something that was okay if I ended up being pregnant.  My dad is a dentist and my sister and brother-in-law are pharmacist and Amoxicilin is 100% fine according to them all.  You'll be fine, I promise.

  • I was just on amoxicillin a few weeks ago for a cold.  I was also on it more than once when I was pregnant the first time.  It is safe to take--safer than letting the infection continue and causing more problems.

You were on antibiotics for a cold?

  • Must have been a bad cold? I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has taken antobiotics while being pregnant. And as i thought, letting the infection will do more harm.

haha this.  Colds are caused by viruses *facepalm*

OP, if your doctor says it's safe, it's safe!

  • Maybe she meant sinus infection. I've taken that before and referred to it as a cold.

OP, if your doctor says it's fine, I would just make the best of your situation. Your body is working really hard right now and does not need to be fighting off infection along with it. The pros of taking the prescription outweigh the cons in my opinion.

  • I just had my tooth pulled two weeks ago and I took amoxicillin prior to that for the infection.

  • I took Keflex a few weeks ago for an infection - not worried about it at all.  Letting infection run rampant through my body is a far worse risk to the baby.
