How do u know if u have OHSS?

Just had my ER yesterday. I felt ok leaving the RE's office then the pain meds started to wear off and I started feeling pain around my upper abdomen and also some spasms in my back. I also have pain in my ovaries which is a given but I'm just wondering if this is normal after ER or do I have a case of mild OHSS? :( oh i am super bloated and about 4 pounds heavier..

Re: How do u know if u have OHSS?

  • If you gain more weight tomorrow I would be concerned but you sound like I did after retrieval. I took more pain meds til the second day home from retrieval and drank Gatorade, ate proteins instead if carbs and slept. I felt better before my 3dt.

  • I felt so aweful and bloated after my 2nd ER, it was the worst! Keep an eye on your weight gain and I'd take more painkillers, Colace or some other laxative, and keep up with the electrolyte drinks. If its still horrible tomorrow or you have another weight increase, call your RE.

  • The tell tale sign for me was extreme bloating above my belly button which was preceded with a horrible bout of nausea over the toilet/sweating/shaking/the whole 9 without any actual vomit.  My stomach literally, no exaggeration, looked like I was 5 months pregnant.  It was insane, none of my clothes fit at all, even stretchy workout clothes were tight and uncomfortable.  Are you able to move around OK, residual pain from the ER in your ovaries aside?  I couldn't lay down or sit up without intense discomfort - DH would have to pull me up because I simply couldn't do it on my own for a few days.  It also hurt when DH would move in bed and shake the bed even the tiniest bit.  You'll KNOW if you have it.

@FutureMrsW9: i cant tell if its bloated from indigestion or feels like horrible gas, sorry TMI. I didnt gain more weight as compared to yesterday. Actually felt a lil better this morning but the upper abdomen pain is the most noticeable. It starts to be uncomfortable when I eat or afterwards.
My RE says to call him tomorrow if I don't feel better. I'm just worried I have a mild version of it. But i guess if its mild, it should go away? You didnt end up getting treated for it, right?
  • Yup, it sounds like you may have some OHSS, maybe just a mild case.  It DEFINITELY feels worse when you eat/drink....sucks :-(  I always felt the best in the mornings when I woke up, but then it would get worse throughout the day as I would move around and eat.  No, I wasn't treated for it.  They said if I wanted to I could get the fluid drained, but that it would most likely just come back so it was pointless unless I got to the point where I needed to be hospitalized.  I felt better enough to go to work about 6 days after the ER (ER was Friday, and I finally went back to work the following Thursday).  I wasn't totally comfortable the whole day, but enough that I could drive and sit up all day.  By the weekend I felt totally better.  I understand how uncomfortable it can be, but there's really nothing they can do.  They also offered me Tylenol w/Codeine, but I didn't take it because it wasn't pain, it was discomfort and the painkillers wouldn't really help that.  GL and I hope you feel better soon!  I know how sucky it is :-(

  • Oh, are you doing a fresh transfer (if you already told us, sorry, it's so hard to keep track of everyone!!!)?  If you do have OHSS, you may want to consider changing to a frozen cycle because if you end up pregnant it might get worse an will stick around for weeks.  That's why we're doing frozen....because of my initial high follie counts, my RE knew I would probably get OHSS and didn't want to risk the fresh transfer.  Just something to think about...

  • @FutureMrsW9 Yup, nurse called me stating that i have it..well I guess its at least not that bad...you're strong to have handled your symptoms. We're doing a frozen transfer next October. I thought that The worse part was over but recovering from this sucks :(
Oh well, i guess if we end up with a healthy baby, it was worth it.
I'm back to work today but taking it easy. Thanks for your advice. I should feel better by next week, right?
  • Once you get AF you'll feel 100% better!  I was pretty much back to myself about a week after.  And, yes, I just kept telling myself that it was for the cause and worth it.  I know how miserable it can be, but it's only temporary!  And please, I was a big baby and made DH do everything for me - granted I could walk upright for about 6 days, but there really was nothing I could do so I just rested as much as I could until I could handle driving.  FEEL BETTER!!!!

  • I think its pretty normal to feel how youre feeling after ER. when I had ohss i cld hardly walk or move and there was no way to lay that was comfortable. It also killed to eat.
