Extreme morning sickness

So I am 6wks today, and yesterday was my first day of morning sickness. But of course my body doesn't just want to do waves of nausea, or just during a certain time of day.. No my body wants to be feel sick 24hrs of the day. I keep running to the bathroom and only dry heaving, I think I would feel better if I just threw up. Yesterday I ate crackers and ginger ale that helped a bit. This morning I slowly ate a banana while I was getting ready for work and that helped a bit. My mom told me to try tea, so I'm gonna give that a shot tonight when I get home from work. Anyone else feeling this crappy that they want to rip their insides out to feel better? Oh and to top it off, I feel like I need to poop and nothing happens.

Re: Extreme morning sickness

  • Mine was TERRIBLE! I couldn't keep anything down, not even water. I called my doctor and they got me a prescription for Zofran, which works wonders for me. I'm still a little nauseous, but I can function at work without running to the bathroom because I'm getting sick every 15 minutes. If you're not ready for medication, I've heard vitamin B6 helps with nausea, it didn't for me. I've also tried sea bands, which everyone swears by, but didn't work for me. They might for you. Talk with your OB, I'm sure they have some remedies, or they can get you the meds. Good luck! :)

I'm not saying I know more than your doctor and please don't take this the wrong way but my cousin in law took Zofran and when her daughter was born she had heart problems and has to have numerous surgeries. Her doctor now thinks it was caused by her MS medication Zofran. So just be aware that it COULD happen. It probably won't or else they would discontinue the drug but it did happen to my cousin in law and its something her daughter will have to deal with the rest of her life (she's only a few months old)

  • I work with babies with congenital heart defects everyday and, most of the time, doctors do not know what causes them. Your cousin's doctor may have been speculating about the effect of Zofran on the development of her baby's heart, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence to back this. There are actually very few medications taken during pregnancy which have shown a correlation to heart defects such as some seizure meds and lithium (usually taken for bipolar disorder). I took Zofran throughout my first pregnancy and have a very healthy little girl. I will caution you that Zofran can cause headaches and constipation. In fact, for me, the constipation was as bad as the nausea so I only took it when absolutely necessary. What helped me the most was always keeping something in my stomach. The more hungry I was, the more nauseous I was. Also, sucking on candy like lifesavers or lemon drops helped with my gagginess. Good luck. If nothing else helps, by all means try Zofran! It helped keep me out of the hospital on several occasions when I couldn't keep water down!
You might be a great resource for me! (well I hope not...) My son was born with a heart defect...surgery at 4 weeks old to repair a coarctation of the aorta - perfectly fine now! His dr's told me there is a chance our future children will also have similar defects (DH has coarc and bicuspid vavle issues).  Just saying hi, as that's a pretty cool line of work!

  • I love my job. It's certainly hard at times, but kids are so resilient. They amaze me every day!

I'm so glad your son is doing well! I know they have found some genetic component to heart defects so fingers crossed that you are in the clear this time around! We don't see siblings with heart defects very frequently - I can only think of one family (other than a few with identical twins) in the last 5 years of working in my job. Feel free to message me if you ever have any questions or need support. I'd be happy to help as much as I can.

I don't think most people realize how common heart defects are or how important it is that the moat serious ones are diagnosed in utero. That anatomy scan isn't just about finding out if you are having a boy or girl! Make sure they take a long, hard look at the heart and get good, clear pictures. It's crazy how often major defects are missed!

  • I don't mean to depress you, but that isn't extreme MS yet.  With my son, I was sick for the entire 9 months, many of those months bedridden.  I had a condition called hyperemisis Gravardium (HG) and was on a Zofran pump and in and out of the hospital for fluids and IV meds.  All told, the day before I had my son, I weighed in 20 lbs less than I started.  I couldn't work, I constantly had broken blood vessels in my face from puking, it was terrible.  I'm pretty scared of a repeat to be honest.

I hope for you that your morning sickness goes away and doesn't turn into HG.  Fingers crossed

  • I've had the same thing all week and finally caved and called my dr. yesterday after not being able to hold any food down all day.  They recommended Unisom (at night) and Vitamin B6.  So far, so good!  While I still have the nausea, I'm no longer getting sick and have held down my breakfast!

Thank you for easing my mind about it after reading that first response @mrspopsicle !! The first response made me anxious. I just keep in mind that my doctor would not allow me to have it if it would hurt my baby. I am allowed to take one once every 8 hours, I take a maximum of 2 per day. I try to make it with only one. Most of my family had to use it as well, and no one has had any issues. :)

  • I'm feeling like crap 24/7 too. Most of the time, I have this feeling of wanting to heave. Eating helps, but I have to do it constantly, and being 'too full' or 'too empty' both nauseate me so much. I need to burp myself like a baby, just to get it out. When I start puking in the morning, I try coughing or gurgling water to keep it going, just so I can 'get it out of my system' and feel better. I hate this. When will we feel better? 12 weeks? 13? Or even longer? I'm hating this :(....

I think that's different for everyone. A lot of people seem to get better around 13 or 14 week. Mine lasted my entire pregnancy last time...literally everyday until the day I delivered. I hope I have better luck this time.

OMG I hope that both you and I don't have that experience this time around! Let's send each other strength/ anti-nausea vibes!
  • Thanks, it does feel better when I'm always eating... But then I feel like a fat kid... I'm trying to eat more cereal throughout the day because I heard it has a good source of B6 in it. I want week 15 to hurry up and get here so I hopefully will start feeling better. It makes it very hard to work

Sorry but can someone delete this? I think its a very irresponsible thing to post. The chances of Zofran being the cause of your sister's daughter's heart condition are so minimal that this was not worth bringing up. The OP has come here for some reassurance and advice and you've posted this? Give the poor woman a break!

Drs prescribe Zofran when the benefits of not constantly puking outweigh the possible risks. My cousin's wife was actually on 3/4 different meds (inc Zofran) at any one time for HG with DS1 and DS2. She was in hospital once every couple of weeks and couldn't even sip water. The taste of her own saliva made her sick. She was on a cocktail of meds throughout her pregnancies and DS2 is perfect, but DS1 was born with a congenital deformity of the skull because of the mother's poor diet (she is morbidly obese and lives off chicken nuggets). It was corrected and now he's fine.

Please don't go scaremongering on here. It's not the right place.

  • My first pregnancy I had barely any morning sickness and everything was so easy. This time round I feel horrible! I know it's still early on but I just feel so nauseous all day every day! My mom had horrible sickness for all 9 months with all of her 4 kids and I'm afraid I'm following after her this time. Yikes!
  • I had extreme all-day sickness the entire time with DD2, so severe to the point that I actually lost 20lbs. I was given Zofran, it didn't really help. I tried tea and peppermints, to no avail.
