teething/poop question

Addy is working on getting four teeth at once right now. She is a teething nightmare, I feel so bad for her. She seems to be running a fever and has a snotty nose which I think are both common for teething. However, we are running into some major poop issues too. She has had FIVE poopy diapers today and they were all of the diarrhea or near-diarrhea variety. Talk to me about poop during teething. Is this normal? I've been trying to get her to drink more today to keep her hydrated (didn't really work) and I fed her bananas and apple juice to try to help with the loose stools but the poop just keeps on coming. She only has 4 teeth which she got at around the same time a few months ago so I still feel pretty new to this teething stuff.

Re: teething/poop question

  • My daughter has loose stools with teething.  I know she's not sick, because there's only about 2-3 of them a day and it usually lasts no more than 1 day or so.  If it lasts longer than that or she's getting dehydrated or most importantly not acting normal, then it could be something else.

  • Thank you, ladies! I am really confused if it's teething or sickness. She's had two more loose stools so far today and her bottom is now pink. :-( I will see how the rest of the day goes and might make a phone call to her pedi tomorrow. She's been to the doctor a lot lately though (check-up and hearing issue related) and I really don't want to have her go again if it's just teething. I hate these kind of mommy decisions.

  • DD used to get like that when she teethed. She would poop frequently and it was pretty runny. She would always get the runny nose too, and generally just be miserable all the time :-/ We didn't change her diet, it went away every time the tooth causing all the problems came in. We just used Advil when she was in particularly bad pain and lots of frozen yogurt tubes to numb her gums. Hope those teeth make their way through soon, poor LO, teething sucks. :(

DD has loose stools with teething, and when she got 4 molars at once it was the worst. That said, ped said to call at 6 diaharrhea episodes in a day, as that's starting to get to dehydration risk territory. Do you have a nurse hotline you can call, at least? I know how awful it is to go the ped when nothing's wrong - we've done it for phantom ear infections too many times!
Yes! I actually called her pedi's office this AM. I described what was going on (past 2 days have been 5 episodes per day) and she said it is probably just the teething so no need to bring her in. She said to go easy on dairy and give Pedialyte, etc, all the classic stuff. I guess I am still shocked that teething could mess up their stools THIS much. Wow! Thankfully she has only had ONE poop so far today and it was a bit more firm than the previous two days so here's to hoping!
