Well this was unexpected

Bear with me as I am still kind of in shock and my thoughts are going a million miles an hour..... I went in for my routine visit to see my MFM he checked my cervix and was really quiet I knew something was off. He then started the U/S and quickly called in the other dr. They told me I was a CM dilated and baby A was starting to engage. We then found that Colton "baby b" had slowed growth and had not gained anything in a while while Cayden was still right on track. So I'm in the hospital 3 hours from home at a level 4 NICU/ maternity ward where we will soon be meeting our boys if Colton doesn't put on any weight soon. I am on mag. Sulfate and steroids to stop the labor and help their lungs. Everything was going great with them and within a 5 day gap between OB appt and MFM appt things changed drastically. I'm 26 weeks Thursday so I am praying I can keep them in longer. It's terrifying thinking they could be here so soon. I never in a million years thought this was how my day was going to go when I woke up this morning. I'm just doing my best to keep them in and keep calm. Anyone who has delivered around 26 week mark I would love any advice and how things turned out for you!

Praying you can keep them in longer!  I had mine at 28 weeks, and the smaller one was the size of a 26 weeker.  Some preemie moms on the bump put together this blog which is really great if you are expecting a preemie and once they are born.  Here's the link: https://www.preemiemomblog.blogspot.com/

  • Everyone is right - you are in the right place and the mag and the steroids are just what your babies need. I was in the hospital for almost 48 hours and got 2 rounds of steroids before my daughters came at 24 weeks, 6 days.  We had some bumps in the road, but the people who work in NICUs are angels on earth.  Our girls are now 15 months, almost 12 months adjusted and doing great.  Sending thoughts and prayers!

  • I delivered at 26w4d due to HELLP and severe preeclampsia.  It was completely unexpected and the babies were born 9 hours after I went to the doctor.  I was on mag and got the steroid shot for lungs approximately 4 hours before they were born.  Baby A (Quinn) was 1 lb 13 oz and 13.5" long, Baby B (Silas) was 1 lb 13 oz and 13.75" long.  They were born, intubated and taken to the NICU immediately.  I was able to go to the NICU after recovery to see them and touch them.  It was a terrifying sight, however they were alive and okay.

Quinn was in the hospital for 88 days and Silas for 74 days.  I am so happy to say that neither baby has any health issues at all.  We see a physical therapist every week to catch them up to their actual age, but other than that they are treated like term babies.

It is a very hard road, however one you can certainly do and manage.  I'd suggest you check out the preemie board as those ladies are helpful too.  Best of luck to you and your babies, I hope you keep them in for a long time.

  • Update: first of all thank you all so much for your well wishes thoughts and prayers. They really do mean so much when your on this side if the fence that's for sure. Baby B is in the bottom 10% for growth and baby A is in the 30% so I'm being watched very close for IUGR now I will have an ultrasound tomorrow morning and hopefully have an idea of a plan of action. The steroid shots hurt like hell but are so very worth the pain as is the magnesium sulfate it feels like liquid fire in my veins. Right now we are just taking it hour by hour and monitoring thier heart rates and movements very closely until the growth check in the AM with the MFM doc. I'm still waiting to hear from the neonatologist team but they are coming up with the plan of action for the boys should we be delivering soon. I'm so nervous at the thought of preemies. But I'm resting and doing all I can to keep them in to get a little bigger. Each hour feels like a victory that's for sure. Right now we are trying to figure out what to do with our three year old as all our family is 14 hours from us and my husband has crazy working hours that don't work we'll with day care so that's been a bit of a stress and the hospital I am at is 2 1/2/ 3 hour drive from home. This definitely isn't easy but I know each day counts so much. For those of you who have had NICU stay far from home how did you manage it especially if you had a smaller child already at home?

  • I'm sorry that this is happening. I can imagine how shocking and scary it must be.
