Seriously, ECFE?

During our first class today, the teacher looked at me like I had three heads when I said I was going to nurse DD, and said, oh, she doesn't take a bottle? This is a class for babies, surely you've encountered someone nursing their child before. /vent

Re: Seriously, ECFE?

  • Wow! Why would you pump a bottle? I'm sure it isn't a separating class at that age.

Yeah, no separating and all the babies are under a year.

Spray her with boob juice. How was the rest of the class? Is this your first?

Ha. I will next week. Yep, first class today! The rest was ok, definitely got side eyed by the teacher when I said DD had had chicken, and then had to explain BLW. So maybe I will just smile and nod for most of class. Good way to meet local moms in my tiny town though!

  • Fun, fun.  That's unfortunate.  Our ECFE offered to bring me a rocking chair/boppy/basically anything I needed so I could nurse DD.  I was still nursing her past a year in a class and it was never frowned on by the teacher.  Other parents, well that's another story...And you were leaving to nurse during a baby class?  Nope, I just took care of business (discretely!), but I know that's a personal decision :)  Keep up the good work mama!

I want to take an ECFE class but all the ones in my area are in Hmong or Spanish. And I'm not sure how I'd do it with two.

I'd come and nurse with you, and tell all about how DS sucks on chicken.
Do you have ECFE playtime in your area?  We do and I always took DD to it.  I plan to take her to the toddler playtime and just bring the new baby along with me in a wrap or something.  They do prefer you find childcare for the actual classes most of the time, but sometimes it's offered as part of the class.

    What is ECFE?
Early Childhood Family Education  It's offered through the school district, typically on a sliding scale to get families involved and provide early childhood education and socialization to for families.  We love it.  DH is currently taking DD to a Daddy and Me class where he plays with her, learns new songs/finger plays and has discussions with other dads on topics of their choice that the teacher find resources for and guides discussions.

Normally I would stay but she is SO distracted right now that anything other than a quiet room just doesn't work.

Can you do ECFE in a city you don't live in? We're on the border, I'm guessing one of the neighboring 'burbs has English.
I think so, but the prices might be different.  I know playtime was free for us, but there may have been a cost for out of district families.  I think in-district families get priority for registration, but then it's open.  Ours almost always goes to a lottery for the classes so even in-district families don't always get in to their first choice.  I find it hard to believe none of the classes are in English where you are though?  Crazy!

My district just charges a $20 out of district fee in addition the class fee.

Ours has a sliding scale of price, and out of district you pay full price regardless of income. They'll even take people from ::gasp:: Wisconsin.  (Although here that's less weird than where you are.)

  • How much do you pay for these classes? I would love something like that but my state doesn't really believe in education (sarcasm)

I paid 299 for the school year. The class is held once a week.

    Wow that is great!

  • DHs class with DD is once a week until Christmas and was $130 I think.  It depends on how long the the class and how long the session are.
