Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Moving...with Baby

In less than 2 months, we're going to be moving to a new house. It's an amazing house with lots more room, but personally, I really really really hate moving because I moved a lot growing up. Does anyone have any tips to make things run smoothly with baby?

Re: Moving...with Baby

  • We're in the same boat.  We actually just moved in with my parents for 3 weeks while we wait to settle on our new house, so that's two moves for us within the span of a month!  We've had to deal with some real sleep disruptions, and the sudden onset of stranger and separation anxiety.  I'm assuming that they are related to the move, but could just be her age.  Best advice I can give is to try to stick with your normal routine so your baby feels some consistency in the midst of his new environment.  Good luck!

We just did the same exact thing. There was a big disruption in sleep, and after a week in our new home he's finally STTN again in his crib.
  • We moved 1000 miles in late July, DD was almost 8 months old.  She did great overall, but had terrible naps for those few days because she doesn't sleep well outside the crib (so the airport, all the car trips, etc made her a bit of a mess).  My advice is to start packing early - it's hard to feel like you get things accomplished with babies around.

And make sure the crib/mattress is one of the last things in the moving truck (so it's one of the first things out).  Keep all the crib hardware in a baggie and put it in your purse, so you know where it is.  I made sure the crib was one of the first things to go up, so bed time could be normal the day we moved.  Make sure you have whatever tools you need to put it back together, and keep an extra fitted sheet handy.
  • Congrats on the new house! We just moved recently when LO was 4 months. Here's what worked for me:

    1. The day before moving, pack a big suitcase for you and LO. Pack everything you need just as if you were taking a trip out of town for a week.

    2. In your car, Pack the suitcase, PNP, and a box of all your LO's bottle/feeding stuff. And your frozen milk stash if tou have one. Don't let DH or the movers touch any of this.

This made it smooth for me because the minute I walked through the door of the new house I had all the necessities for me and LO to be comfortable in the midst of all the moving craziness.

We used the colored box tape from uhaul and that was awesome to streamline the boxes being put in the right place. Use plain tape to seal the box, and then just put the colored tape across two opposite corners so you can see it no matter which way the box is facing. This let me quickly unpack LO's room first.

I like the PPs suggestion on the crib parts. But if your DH is like mine it may take a few days to get the crib up.
