Tips for sleep training.

DS Is 9 months old. I have tried the cry it out method at night but he would cry for hours I tried to be strong but at some point I feel like its not going to happen. I read people say their lo cried for 25 or 40 minutes but 2 hours is a long time. I don't know what to do to get him to go to sleep on his own. At nap time I can put him down with a bottle and most times he will go to sleep but at night I have to hold him till he falls asleep and then put him down. I don't know what else to do any suggestions would be great
