S/O food allergies

How did you find out your child had a severe allergy. If it was because they ate something and their throat started swelling, etc, what did you do?

DS can eat PB but his skin on his face gets blotchy, with no other symptoms. Same with eggs.

I'm just worried he might be more allergic to something else and i honestly wouldn't know what to do if he suddenly couldn't breath.

  • Dd gets like that with milk. With peanuts, the last time she ate a bite of her grandfather's peanut butter toast she broke out in hives all over her little body. We took her in for allergy testing after that. She had skin tests and a blood test and the allergist told us she would probably out grow the milk allergy but next time she had peanuts the allergy was such that she would have a respiratory reaction, meaning she would stop breathing. She will get retested when she is 5 yrs.

Reactions tend to escalate.  I would bring him in to get tested.

  • He's 14 months. What age do they usually test?

We learned when dd was 9 months and got hives a couple times from skin contact with dairy (ie spoon that I'd been eating yogurt off of etc). She's never actually drank milk or eaten cheese, thank goodness. I would go in for skin testing to be safe; you never know when a life-threatening rxn could occur out of the blue.
  • She was first tested just after 1 year, pretty much right after she had the reaction.

  • We had a series of repeat Ana at 11 weeks to Alimentum formula.  He had very comprehensive allergy testing while he was hospitalized.

  • We got Reese tested at a year for: pineapple, eggs, milk, soy, wheat, cats and dogs. They wouldn't test for peanuts/nuts because she never had them--and you need to "have" sometimes to have an allergic reaction.

At a year she was positive for eggs and dogs.

Over the summer she broke out in hives from eating hummus. In the fall I kissed her after I ate peanut butter and her skin reacted (hives in the spot that kissed her). At 18 months, she got tested for: sesame seeds, chick peas, peanuts and all tree nuts. She tested positive to sesame seeds, peanuts and almonds.

We got her retested in August. Her peanut test was bad--her back had a HUGE red mark on it. She outgrew the sesame seed and almond allergy. She still has an egg allergy. She also gained a cat allergy.

  • My DD had a tiny piece of walnut and immediately broke out in hives around her mouth and all the way up around one eye. She also threw up twice. The ped then recommended an in-office food challenge. Hives again, fainter this time and no vomiting. Then they did blood and scratch testing for all nuts. We carry epis in case her reaction ever becomes respiratory.
